Few contemporary artists explore memory, identity, and mortality with the poetic precision of Chiharu Shiota. The Japanese artist transforms space into labyrinths of thread, enveloping familiar objects—keys, suitcases, pianos—turning them into delicate vessels of shared memory. This autumn, Shiota’s work is on full display across continents, from a sweeping retrospective in Turin to two concurrent solo exhibitions in New York.

hrough thread and installation, Chiharu Shiota transforms space in Turin and New York, revealing memory, identity, and life’s fragile connections.

Zao Wou-Ki occupies a rare position in twentieth-century abstraction: a Chinese-born artist fully at home in Paris, yet one who never abandoned the visual memory of his early training in ink and calligraphy. His work synthesised Eastern technique with European modernism, creating a vocabulary entirely his own.
From December 13, M+ in Hong Kong presents Zao Wou-Ki: Master Printmaker, Asia's first major exhibition dedicated entirely to the artist's graphic works. While Zao is often celebrated for his monumental canvases, this retrospective repositions his work on paper as a laboratory of invention—revealing a practice as exploratory and rigorous as his painting.

Two installations set the tone for Saatchi Gallery’s ambitious 40th-anniversary exhibition: Allan Kaprow’s YARD, a chaotic arrangement of car tyres inviting viewers to physically engage with the work, and, suspended directly above it, Conrad Shawcross’s Golden Lotus (Inverted) — a vintage Lotus car reimagined as a kinetic sculpture. Together, they encourage visitors to become participants rather than passive observers. The Long Now, running until March 1, 2026, takes its name from a concept advocating long-term thinking. Curated by Philippa Adams, the exhibition pushes back against throwaway culture by pairing historic works that remain powerfully relevant with bold new commissions. “At its heart, The Long Now reaffirms the Gallery’s role as a platform for artists to challenge conventions and shape conversations that extend beyond its walls,” says Adams.

Our Story

An Insider View on Arts and Luxury News

When I started my career in journalism few people had mobile phones and Google didn't exist… that may age me, but with more than 500,000 followers through my two Instagram accounts (@Couturenotebook & @LuxArtAsia), I like to think I’ve kept up with the times.

From covering central bank meetings — waiting in lobbies in the vain hope of getting usable quotes on policy changes on interest rates — and more dramatic life-changing events such as seeing firsthand the extent of the Tsunami devastation over Aceh a few days after the 2004 tragedy, to providing insights into the rather more glamorous and often surreal worlds of fashion and art, whether that means attending Paris Couture week or visiting Yayoi Kusama in her studio to watch her work, I can proudly say I’ve covered nearly every journalism beat.

I can craft an interesting story on even the driest subjects and take readers beyond the first couple of graphs.
