And then we were walking. My mom and me. Up the hill, searching for the castle. I'm walking slow since my mom is tired of walking those steep hills. Her face is telling me: "Why didn't we take the bus instead?" While I'm waiting for her, I look up and see this man sitting in front of a small store. Totally in silence and calm. He is just sitting there. Doing nothing. Is he thinking? Is he sleeping? I don't know. But just by doing nothing, he brought this street to life. He looks Indian to me. In the Portugese streets? It got me thinking. What is his story? We were fortunate to enjoy this view for several minutes instead of a split second. And that, dear mom... is why we did not take the bus.

Imagine a place, way up high. A place surrounded by the old walls of a castle. A place where even the peacocks are sitting in trees. A place so high, you can see the blue sea, a large orange bridge and the city with all it's colors covered in sunlight under the clear skies... And there it is. A truck where you can order a glass of wine. Not just a wine. No. A wine with a view. Such a great concept! What a lucky guy.

Stranger: Lucas

Het was op een mooie avond dat ik de oude stad van Ibiza voor het eerst zag. In volle glorie was de stad gehuld in de verlichting van smalle straatjes en vrolijke muziek. De terrasjes waren bezet door blije mensen in zomerse outfits. Op het pad naar de poort van het kasteel, klonk een prachtig geluid: de pamfluit. Daar zat hij. Naast hem een lege rolstoel. Deze man, zonder benen, op een kleed. Hij bespeelde het instrument prachtig. Whitney Houston zou trots geweest zijn als ze deze versie van haar nummer kon horen. Deze persoon gun ik een fooi. Even neem ik de tijd om plaats te nemen op de grond en het talent van deze muzikant te aanschouwen in deze dromerige avondsetting aan de oude poort. Een bewust moment van dankbaarheid en geluk. De klim gaat voort naar de top van het stadje op de berg om van het uitzicht te genieten over Ibiza stad. Op de terugweg naar beneden hoop ik nog een nummer te mogen horen vanuit de pamfluit. Maar helaas. De plek waar het kleed lag, is leeg.

Een week later. Punta Arabi, nabij de hippiemarkt op zo'n half uurtje rijden van Ibiza stad. Mijn gehoor staat op scherp en herkent in een fractie van een seconde dezelfde pamfluit. Ik loop op een andere plek naar hetzelfde kleed, dezelfde rolstoel en dezelfde man. Ik merk al snel dat hij geen engels spreekt en ik geen spaans. Toch doen we beiden ons best. Hij herkent mij, lacht en zegt: Eivissa. De spaanse naam voor Ibiza stad. De connectie van herkenning tussen vreemdelingen blijft mooi. Blijheid spreekt ook uit zijn ogen. Dit gezicht met bijhorende geluid heeft eindelijk een naam: Lucas.

Connectie maken met een onbekende is leuk. Die eerste indruk. Hoe ziet iemand jou. En hoe zie jij een ander? Wat maakt die connectie? Wanneer heb jij voor het laatst een onbekende recht in de ogen gekeken? Je hebt zien en doorzien. Heb jij het ooit ervaren om binnen 1 minuut het gevoel te hebben dat je iemand al jaren kent? Oprechte interesse tonen in elkaar zonder enige afleiding. Probeer het, ervaar het en laat je verrassen. Waarom? Het is mooi.

Stranger: Suzan

Sunglasses, juwelry, music, dream catchers and more. The hippie market of Punta Arabi is colourful and busy. I hear the happy voices of many tourists in search for the free spirits on Ibiza. For a brief moment I close my eyes and it sounds like I'm in The Netherlands instead of Spain.

Then I see a pair of beautiful boots. Using my best English, I asked the lady about the price. Which wasn't that hard, but I thought that sentence was in flawless English, till she responds to me perfectly in Dutch. So I guess I can't hide the dutchess in me. Enrique would say, you can run, you can hide, but you can't escape the Dutch.

Her looks matches nicely with the products that she was selling. Blond hair, a hat, bohemian style clothes, shells around her arm, topped with a smiling face. We started to chat. I told her that I noticed a lot of foreigners selling at this market, just like her. I asked her if she would like to tell me how she ended up selling on Ibiza. Her name is Suzan and she was more then happy to share her story about the connection and strengthening between different cultures. And I am more then happy to share it with you.

One year ago. The will to learn Spanish and the curiousity about the Spanish culture. What place better to learn, then Spain itself? Suzan was on this mission, that made her decide to move to Ibiza.

This mission became an adventure. With her Dutch 'tourist' looks and the lack of knowledge about the language, she noticed it was difficult to really connect with the locals.

During summer she got the chance to work at the market, with Natalia, a true spanish lady from Barcelona. Natalia did not speak English very well. So she had some struggles speaking and understanding the many tourists. Suzan could speak and teach her English. And Natalia could teach Suzan. Also about her culture, her lessons in life in this beautiful country. Every week they learned a lot from each other. They recognized, surprised and discovered about each other, which created this warm bond between these two.

Afgelopen maand heb ik een hoop fijne mensen ontmoet.
Dit was niet echt een portret, maar het waren wel strangers.
De gouden zonnestralen aan het einde van de dag maakte het plaatje compleet van de vrienden onderweg. Ook nieuwe strangers zijn onderweg.
