📍 Location: Kaplan Gallery, Mateu Obrador 8, Palma

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday for the opening of Marcos Vidal’s ‘DIY (Do it yourself)’.

Through a practice rooted in the everyday, Marcos invites us to take a fresh look at what usually goes unnoticed: common objects, gestures and materials which, when reinterpreted, take on new possibilities and meanings.
His work invites us to reflect on transformation, appropriation and the ability to construct new narratives from what already exists.

Thank you to the artist, friends, collectors and visitors who shared the evening with us and who, through their presence and perspective, ensured the exhibition continued to expand beyond the artworks themselves.

The exhibition will be open by appointment until 24 July.

Atraco eléctrico (Electric Heist
From the series: DIY (Do it yourself)
Marcos Vidal

167 x 30 x 20 cm
Sculpture, carved pine wood and steel

Vidal’s practice begins with collecting. Saws, cables, pipes, spatulas, electrical plugs, measuring tapes — and above all, wooden blocks — are removed from their original context and transformed into something new.

Through subtle shifts of function and meaning, everyday objects become poetic interventions and critical reflections on systems of value, consumption, and the structures that shape contemporary life.

No longer defined by utility, these objects enter a different condition: one where function disappears and aesthetic presence remains.

167 x 30 x 20 cm

Behind every exhibition install lies a curatorial process — an invisible work of listening, observing and creating relationships between artworks, space and perception. It is not only about deciding where each piece belongs, but about shaping encounters, tensions and moments of pause.

As we install the new solo show by Marcos Vidal, each work gradually finds its place, entering into dialogue with the others and with the architecture that surrounds it.

Meanings shift, connections emerge, and the exhibition becomes an open space for interpretation — completed each time through the eyes of the viewer.

________

Nuevos Monumentalismos is a series of oil paintings and charcoal drawings that reflects on the role of public monuments in the urban landscape.

Through these works, the artist questions how symbols of power and authority shape our collective imagination and influence our perception of history and memory.

Symbiosis also extends into artistic creation. A real-life couple develops a shared artistic project as both a challenge and an experiment, questioning the nature of collaboration itself.

Symbiotic relationships can be mutualistic, commensal, or even parasitic. Who benefits the most: one individual, both partners, or the project itself? The intention is a positive interaction that feeds and expands itself, where the outcome becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Symbiosis as a way of life: in contrast to competition and conflict, cooperation, trust, and shared responsibility emerge as the only true guarantee for the future.

"We grew up in the desert surrounded by thorny bushes and cacti.

We didn't go to the desert to be tempted by the devil: we wanted to sin; we dreamed of a garden.

There was so much to experience that the tree of knowledge became a forest to us. Luis went to investigate, he went to the future to look with the eyes of a visionary and mystic and, following in the footsteps of the European painters who had documented the landscape of Latin America in the past, he recorded the catastrophe: the collision of technical progress with nature, the ruins of architecture in the post-apocalyptic landscape, the juxtaposition of optical illusion and distorted perception of reality.

It is often said that the Europeans traded us gold for mirrors, but this is a mistranslation: what they gave us were mirages.

They wanted us to believe the story that Europe was the Garden of Eden, when it was the place where we lost our unity and where nature became a deceptive projection.

And there was Luis to paint it: the garden was a bubble, a hazy and fragmented reflection; because we grew up in the desert, we are experts in mirages!" Juan Pablo Villalobos
