Jean-Michel Basquiat 👑 was more than a painter his art was a powerful social statement about race, power, and history. Starting as a street artist in Brooklyn under the tag SAMO©️, he announced himself to a New York art world that was not prepared for a young Black genius.
•
When galleries and collectors discovered him, they quickly commercialized his work, even though the art itself criticized the systems of exploitation and inequality around him. Basquiat used symbols, text, and historical references to highlight Black heroes, oppression, and the legacy of colonialism.
•
He died at 27, and after his death the market value of his work soared, reflecting the irony he often exposed society celebrates and profits from Black brilliance but fails to protect the people behind it.
