You should not just focus your search on high job pay, but also other factors that impact your quality of life:
🔎 The standards of living, job opportunities

💡 How many firms are there? Do you only want to work at a small firm or large firm?

✅ Further licensing and education – Are there quality resources and educational opportunities there?

With this in mind, it's time to choose a city in which to develop your skills and grow as an architect. Which one are you going to choose?

[Participants] A participant of our Job + J1 Visa Program is settling into life in New York, balancing the practical challenges of moving abroad with the start of a new professional experience. After exploring different neighborhoods across Queens, Manhattan and Long Island, Park Slope in Brooklyn became the right fit, offering a quieter residential environment with easy access to the city.

At work, the participant has already joined a residential competition project at S9 Architecture and Engineering, gaining first-hand insight into how a New York studio approaches concept development and design. Outside the office, weekends have become a chance to discover the city, from Midtown and Central Park to Dumbo, Prospect Park and Battery Park.

[Participants] A participant of our Job + J1 Visa Program is preparing to move from Madrid to Los Angeles after completing a Master’s Degree in Architecture. Through the Architect-US and Arquia Scholarship opportunity, she secured an internship at Morphosis, where she will have the chance to experience a different professional environment and explore new approaches to architecture, technology and urbanism.

With her J-1 visa approved, she is now getting ready for the move and the start of this new chapter in the United States. Beyond developing her architectural skills, she hopes to improve her English, learn from an international team and discover Los Angeles both as a professional and as someone experiencing the city for the first time.

👉 When you're considering your next steps in your career, you're probably considering which ones will take you to the next level. With these five tips we will help you improve your position within the architecture industry!

🔎 Try to view the firms problems as your problems when possible!: You should try to consider what are the strains and pains that your firm are going through and how your skills can help provide an alleviation in those growing pains.

👍 Look for the chance to shine and help out!: You can always go straight to management and ask for more responsibility, as well as show them your portfolio one-on-one if it is a larger firm.

💡 Firms have different structures, but you have to understand horizontal vs vertical organization: A clear and easy way to understand what it takes to move up is understanding how the company is structured and what are the responsibilities of each position.

😉 Resolve problems before they become problems: You must be pro-active as an architect, as you must be prepared ahead of time for any for-seeable problems.

✅ Sometimes you have to be a different perspective: You may find yourself being between the clients you work for and the employers who pay you, so when you think your employers might not being a different perspective, you need to take a moment to think about the impact.

[Featured Company] Wheeler Kearns Architects / Wheeler Kearns Architects is a collective practice of architects who seek to improve their quality of life in environments that reflect their passion, purpose, and vision. The firm was founded in 1987 by Dan Wheeler. The idea came to him after winning a design competition where the challenge was to build a large residential project in southwestern Michigan. It was called Daniel Wheeler Architects until 1990 when Larry Kearns became a founding partner.

In its' current form, leadership is provided by 6 owners: the founding partners Dan Wheeler and Larry Kearns, Mark Weber (principal since 2001), Joy Meek and Jon Heinert (both principals since 2006), and Chris-Annmarie Spencer (principal since 2019).

At WKarch they are proud that their clients refer to them as "partners" as often as "architects". It represents their conviction that, occasionally, you also need someone who isn't afraid to take on the ordinary in addition to having a grand vision. As a "collective practice of architects," they leverage their unique structure to get several ideas from the team early on in the design process. [News] Herzog & de Meuron has transformed the former Merrill Science Center at Amherst College in Massachusetts into a new student center and dining hall, reusing the existing concrete foundations of the 1960s brutalist structure. The project expands the building from 80,000 to 120,000 square feet while opening up the site to views that had previously been blocked.

Two new mass-timber levels rise above the retained foundations, with Western Red Cedar cladding creating a gradual transition from dark to light across the sloping site. Deep overhanging eaves provide shade and shelter to outdoor spaces on the upper floors, reinforcing the building’s relationship with its landscape while giving new life to the existing structure.
