Quoting popular culture and not a prestigious artist or art critic particularly fits the idea of this post. For the ones with patience, thoughts are in the carousel (Premisses of a future article, about Individualism and art).So if you have anything burning within you to tell about it, shoot. You may appear in it (with your permission ofc).
“If buyers are going to plunk down money, good money, they want to know what they are getting, who they are getting. People don’t buy art. They buy the artist.”
- Monarch Legacy of Monsters ep. 3
- Writers (They are 3 so I don’t know who exactly wrote it): Matt Fraction, Andrew Colville, Chris Black

🗣️"Art is not content.
The goal here, remember, is to launch your art career
Not to become a content creator.
There is a difference:
We are using social media as a tool to get what we want
Recognition and financial stability
But you don’t have to use social media as everyone else does.”
➡️- “How To Launch Your Art Career in 2023 (seriously)” on YouTube
Great video by Kelsey Rodriguez
🤔 While the notion that 'art isn't content' is thought-provoking, practically speaking, art functions as content.
Let's consider the trinity of artistic communication:
🎨1. the artist,
🖼️2. the medium (or media),
🌐3. and the audience
An artist utilizes a medium - say, a painting - as a vessel to convey their expression to the audience. The introduction of Instagram into this equation simply adds another layer to the media used.
Some artists are using Instagram directly as Art. For example Amalia Ulman did it in the past, quite efficiently in the matter of transmitting a message.
Yet, Kelsey’s perspective helps to tell that an artist shouldn’t use Instagram for the sake of generating social media engagement. This is a trap many artists fall into, where the platform benefits more than the artist themselves.
Instagram, while a powerful platform, should ideally be used as a portfolio, a showcase of your Art, rather than a battleground for social media engagement. Why? Because Instagram, like the others,is more a marketing platform than a so-called social media. They are using your traffic for ads, your behaviors as data, and your content for AI generation.

🎨 "For every artist that has something worthwhile to say but lacks the technical ability to communicate his idea perfectly, there are a thousand artists with all the technique in the world and nothing to say." - Richard Diebenkorn (Unverified source) 🤔
What do you think?
1️⃣ or 2️⃣?
1️⃣. In today's world 🌍, you can't swing a cat 🐱 without hitting an artist 🎨, there's an obsession with technique ✍️. It's as though we've forgotten that art is supposed to make you feel something ❤️, not just make you fall in admiration 👏 of how accurately someone can paint 🖌️ a fruit bowl 🍎. Those who focus on 'having something to say' 💬 but ignore the importance of saying it well 🗣️ might as well be shouting into the void 🌌. It's the equivalent of writing a novel 📚 without bothering to learn grammar ✏️. Sure, you have a story 📖, but who will bother to read it?
Or
2️⃣. The word “art” 🖼️ is derived from the Latin ars, which originally meant “skill” 💪. It's about the ability to replicate the world 🌏 with such fidelity that it leaves the viewer in awe 😲. Those who say they have a 'message' 💬 but can't draw a straight line 📏 to save their lives are simply making excuses for their lack of dedication to the craft 🚫. It's like a chef 👨‍🍳 who can't cook but claims they have a great understanding of flavors 🍲. Art is a reflection of the society from which it springs 💭. It's not just about how skillfully one can render a scene or a subject 🌸. It's about what that rendering says about our times ⏳, our struggles 😥, our triumphs 🏆. The technically skilled artists are often too busy showing off their prowess 💃 to remember that art is supposed to comment on the human experience, not just replicate it.

As always, starting with a quote:
“I have written some papers on war finance and investments in wartime. What I found for occupied France was: people were looking for discreet assets (small and easily movable items holding significant value) such as stamps or petite artworks.”

Art Talk
Historically, art has played dual roles—both as a reflection of society's struggles and a commodity in economic downturns. Art became a portable and valuable asset during tumultuous times, such as wars. Now, in our modern age, we witness wealthy collectors investing even more in art during economic recessions.
Propaganda too has used art's potency. Soviet Realism's optimistic state narratives and WWII's U.S. posters pushing war bonds tell a story. Artists mostly, if not always, have been following the narratives of the society they live in.
With the rise of social media, artists now share their space with influencers, shifting the content creation paradigm. They are not the only individual image makers, and if there are genuine disruptors, they should question the game they play.
Is working alone the answer for artists, or is coming together a more effective response in these challenging times? Image makers can have an impact in our society, but it won’t happen if they just focus on competition. The human brain is wired to process visuals 60k times faster than text—Behemoths like Disney, know it well and rally artists for communicating their visions. An artist's solitary quest, devoid of societal engagement, is relegated to mere signatures on petitions or complaints on IG when trouble comes. Their masterpieces? At best transportable assets for stormy days.

Coming back to IG quoting .art
This is about artists getting their best when working for themselves. What do you think?
When you do something for yourself, even if you don't entirely love it, you'll still pour your heart into it, right? It's for your growth, after all.

Is this always true? Sometimes, when we're our own boss, might we cut corners or let that critical self-review slide? With an external motivator, like a client's deadline or a gallery's theme, there's a chance of getting complacent. We might bask too long in our comfort zones, needing fresh challenges.

On the flip side, self-driven projects can be gold mines of passion and authenticity. They're like personal letters to the world. We often touch others more deeply by doing something for ourselves. Plus, there's an unmatched joy in creating without external constraints - like a bird soaring high on its terms!

So, while the pull to work passionately for oneself is undeniable, always keep the fire of self-improvement burning. Because passion, without progression, might just remain... well, passion.

Have you ever done a project solely for yourself and felt its energy was different? Do you always give 100% when no one's watching? 🤔

A lighter and funny quote this time. Found it while working on updating our article about Instagram. Are you feeling concerned? 🧐
"Too young for Facebook
Too old for Instagram
Too ugly for Instagram
Too stupid for twitter
Where do I go"
