A banana duct-taped to a wall sold for $120,000 at Miami’s Art Basel, and I’m feeling very conflicted about it.... The buyers buy the concept behind the artwork: if you want to install it, you have to buy a banana yourself and stick it to the wall according to instructions in a 14-page document.🧐
The artist Maurizio Cattelan “The Comedian” does have something to say; the piece is about how the meaning and importance of objects changes depending on the context. Well, it is both a funny critique of the absurdities of art and capitalism, yet it is inherently part of that problem, too. It’s having your cake and eating it too (although maybe “having your banana bread” would be more appropriate here).

PS. Don't be surprised if Miss. BananArty ends up turning this into a parody art version😂
