Opening today at 119 Marvila Studios, Lisbon, where “El eco y la sombra”, a new site-specific installation by Los Bravú, Dea Gómez and Diego Omil, will remain on view through November 27.

Conceived specifically for the space as part of Mostra Espanha 2026, the project brings together neon, video and painting to explore movement, rhythm and the emotions that emerge through their representation.

Curated by Íñigo Rodríguez, the installation draws on the visual language of comics, references from art history and the tradition of the Galician popular festival, creating an immersive environment where image, memory and collective ritual intersect.

“El eco y la sombra” is presented within Mostra Espanha 2026, the Spanish cultural biennial in Portugal, organised by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Portugal, with the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Instituto Cervantes de Lisboa. The project is coordinated by Boom Cultura Iberoamericana (BCI) and hosted by 119 Marvila Studios.

“Elusive phenomena that attest to the existence of the material, echo and shadow point to the tension between what we are and what we project. From this ambiguity, El eco y la sombra explores the aesthetic possibilities of movement and the emotions that emerge through its representation.

Conceived as an inhabitable space, Los Bravú’s site-specific installation brings together architecture, neon, video and painting, transforming movement into an experience. An intertwined couple first appears in a blue blown-glass neon work and then in a video in which two figures turn in an ambiguous loop, suspended between dance and struggle.

Movement continues across two monumental comic-book pages that reinterpret the Galician popular festival. Collective dance and intimate gestures articulate different physical and emotional rhythms, in dialogue with Aby Warburg’s Pathosformeln and with the capacity of images to travel, survive and acquire new meanings throughout history.

This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with our gallery and is part of a series of solo exhibitions whose main objective is to offer a deeper perspective on the working processes and historiographic context of the artists with whom we collaborate.

Juan Miguel Pozo (Holguín, Cuba, 1967) studied at the School of Painting and Drawing of Isla de Pinos and at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana. He completed his artistic training at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the guidance of K. Klapheck. After more than twenty years living in Berlin, he now has his studio in Madrid, where he has lived since 2025.

His painting practice begins with a consideration of the urban body as a complex and silent cultural organism, capable of resisting the weight of time, ideologies, oblivion, and political control. Each painting is, more than an image, a reflection on how societies remember their own history and on what they choose to forget.

Two concepts are particularly relevant to his imaginary: the scar and silence. His landscapes are often invaded by sweeps of color that appear to emerge from the laceration of the image’s surface. This process of extraction or erasure creates an area charged with gestural violence and marked by absence, through which the artist reflects on the impact of politics on the natural fabric of a city. Spaces marked by power in Cuba are spaces of symbolic repression that always leave a trace that time or human intervention can barely manage to erase completely.

This informalist and gestural impulse is counterbalanced by the underlying presence of the Cartesian and the geometric: Constructivism. Intersecting lines and gray geometries reminiscent of Soviet architecture coexist with unfinished or dark spaces, activated with clinical precision. As a counterpoint, a noise that corrodes everything erupts in the form of light: the chaotic pulse of the tropics.

José Bedia’s work brings together a profound engagement with tribal anthropology and ethnographic research,
a sustained commitment to fieldwork, and layered sociological and historiographical inquiry. He is particularly invested in examining the structures and internal logics of iconographic systems across diverse cultural traditions worldwide.
As an integral part of his artistic process, Bedia spends extended periods living among Indigenous communities in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Through these sustained exchanges, he develops relationships that inform his studio practice, deepening his exploration of enduring human archetypes.

José Bedia was a key figure in the radical transformation of Cuban art initiated by the landmark exhibition Volumen Uno, in which he participated actively. From his inclusion in Magiciens de la Terre (Paris, 1989) to receiving First Prize at the Beijing Biennial in 2010, his career has developed on a strongly international scale.
His work is included in major public institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), among others.

JOSÉ BEDIA: INNER CIRCLE JOURNEY 1976 - 2026

This Saturday, September 12, at 12pm, we are pleased to present, as a Madrid premiere, the latest and most comprehensive volume dedicated to José Bedia’s career and work.

In the presence of the artist, we will host a presentation and book signing of Inner Circle Journey 1976–2026, a publication spanning five decades of his artistic practice, from his involvement with the Volumen Uno movement to his establishment as one of the foremost figures in contemporary Cuban art.

Published by 5 Continents Editions, the volume brings together texts by Omar-Pascual Castillo, James López, Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz, Suset Sánchez Sánchez, François Vallée, and Alan West-Durán, alongside an extensive selection of works, images from Bedia’s personal travels, and materials from his tribal collection.

Brenda Cabrera studied at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana, graduating in 2017, and later at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), where she completed her studies in 2022. Her practice encompasses painting and drawing, while also engaging critically with emerging technologies in the field of art, including NFTs.

Endowed with a singular visual grammar, Cabrera has established a distinctive position within the contemporary art scene, with her work presented in galleries and at art fairs on both sides of the Atlantic. Her practice has received international recognition, notably through the VOX Libera: Women Who Inspire Acquisition Prize at the 20th edition of the Feria Internacional de Arte de Bogotá (ARTBO), where she also presented a solo exhibition in 2024.

“The body of work in this exhibition corresponds to two different intentions brought together under the same title. On the one hand, there is a group of works created on traditional textiles from West Africa (specifically Mali), carefully selected from all the ethnographic material I collected in situ, (…)
In a way, I am paying tribute to anonymous individuals who, nevertheless, have managed to preserve a craft tradition, and I have sought to interweave it as organically as possible with my usual iconography.
