Pet turtles purchased online have given 15 people salmonella in 11 US states, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Usually, more common sources of infection are through food, like raw chicken, but this time it’s contact with mini reptiles that has led to an outbreak.

People infected with the bacteria develop diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps within six hours to six days of being exposed. The illness lasts between four to seven days and most of those infected this time were children.

After speaking to ill people and doing laboratory tests, the CDC determined that turtles bought from the internet with shells less than 4 inches (10cm) were causing the infection.

The sale of these tiny reptiles as pets was banned in the US more than 40 years ago because they were known to spread salmonella through their droppings, water from their tanks or even simply people touching them and not washing their hands. In the early 1970s, there were an estimated 280,000 infections every year, mostly in small children.

Two-thirds of Australia's Great Barrier Reef showed the largest amount of coral cover in 36 years.

The reef still remains vulnerable to increasingly frequent mass bleaching, however, an official long-term monitoring programme reported on Thursday.

The recovery is in the central and northern stretches of the UNESCO world heritage-listed reef.

It is contrasted with the southern region, where there was a loss of coral cover due to crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS) said in its annual report.

The world’s tallest tree is officially off limits to visitors after an influx of travel bloggers has devastated the surrounding forest.

The 115.92-metre-tall coast redwood known as Hyperion is located in California’s Redwood National Park in the US. Located deep in the park’s forests, the record-breaking tree is not accessible via any trails, meaning visitors have to fight their way through the undergrowth to get to it.

Now anyone found near the world’s tallest tree could face up to six months in prison and a $5,000 (€4,884) fine.

“Hyperion is located off trail through dense vegetation and requires heavy 'bushwhacking' in order to reach the tree,” California’s Redwood National Park said in a warning to visitors.

“As a visitor, you must decide if you will be part of the preservation of this unique landscape - or will you be part of its destruction?”

Pet owners in a southwest German town have been allowed to let their cats outdoors again after a temporary curfew was lifted.

Authorities in the town of Walldorf introduced the measure in May to protect a rare bird during its breeding season.

But the unique lockdown ended two weeks ahead of schedule on Monday.
