A+E: You talk about deliberately making mistakes in your work to give direction, tell us a bit more about that.

OF: When I was younger I used to make constant mistakes whilst screen printing and this in turn would spark ideas for new projects. This could involve a misprints smudges or maybe or printing overlays on old work and seeing new compositions. These were all great in the learning process and helped me to come up with new ideas as I worked my way up.

These days I tend to print as best as possible but nothing is perfect and there are still little mistakes here and there - there’re not so deliberate anymore but they are a reminder that the artwork is handmade.

🪩

A+E: What was the first screen print you ever made?

OF: I still remember the first screenprint I ever made, it was at University when I was 19 at Central St Martins in Holborn - at the time I thought you could only print on fabric, I had yet to understand screen printing benches. The screen print was just black circles that had been cut out of card board printed using an open screen onto 1970’s retro bed covers. I still have the print somewhere..

🪩

A+E: Congratulations on opening your own print studio! What made you decide this and hows it all going?

OF: In January 2023 I’d had enough of the prices in London, I felt like I was going round in circles. I needed change and a larger studio to expand my work practice, I couldn’t afford it in London so I really worked my arse off to make it happen and I’m so glad its finished. It’s pretty much taken me a year to sort out. The upside is focus, space and more time to print but there are downsides with just being on my own but hey the grass is always greener on the other side.

I’ve set up workshops which are now available on my website and eventually as the days get warmer and more sunny i’ll be loving it more and more.

Dancers at Ku, Privilege, cerca 1976 - 1985, photographed by Oriol Maspons

Gelatin silver fine art photographic print from original negative, selenium archival treatment

Stamped, numbered and signed on verso

In the summer of 1954 Oriol Maspons travelled to Ibiza for the first time and captured an island yet to be discovered.
Equipped with a Hasselblad camera he shot the dusty streets of Dalt Vila, doñas in doorways and children playing in the streets, for the first decade he discovered the island.
Towards the 80s he swapped to an Olympus film camera, capturing the notorious beginnings of Ibiza’s infamous nightlife and day to day goings on.

Hailing from Catalunya Barcelona, Maspons spent the golden ages of the 1950s to 1980s as a photojournalist. He would go on to work as a correspondent for the magazine Arte Fotográfico and exhibiting his work in Madrid and Barcelona.

“It’s extremely important to be able to bring these photographs back to their origin of Ibiza for people to see the island in its rawest and untouched form as well as continuing Oriol’s fascinating legacy” - Emma Salahi, Founder, Agony + Ecstasy Gallery

Never forget your beginnings in your career 🪽

Agony + Ecstasy’s first exhibition ‘Chapter Uno’ took place last summer at The Hub in Santa Gertrudis Ibiza. Celebrating a new breath of fresh art air to the island. We had works from Heath Kane, Hannah Shillito, Lauren Baker, Babak Ganjei, Dana Wyse, Richard Pendry, Jesus Saves Ibiza, Sequin Kay, Sara Pope, Misfit, Grow Up, Haus of Lucy and James Talon.

It was pedal to the metal. White walls were painted, art was hung, all on the stroke of midnight. I had never needed a drink more.

Currently, we have a lovely selection of art at The Hub now which everyone in Ibiza should check out if they’re in town and let us know what you think.

Onto the millions of projects we have in the pipeline this year.. Sign up to our newsletter to find out what’s happening!

A+E: As an artist, your work is very versatile, do you think it’s important for artists to experiment in different genres?

OF: I don’t know what it is about me but I have always struggled with sticking to one thing when making art - I like so many different things and I want to try it all out. I didn’t enter the art world as an illustrator or painter. I had a deep need to learn the craft of screen printing and as a result I want to challenge myself with different printing techniques which means that some days I’ll want to try out CMYK printing which may involve me creating still lives and playing around with photography and then on other days I like to print big bold spot colours which work well with typography. So I think it is important to try out different genres especially if your heart tells you its the right thing to do.

🌾

A+E: Tell us about Cornflake. Where did you inspiration come from?

OF: For the Cornflake still life artwork its all about collecting interesting objects from days gone by. I like to position them amongst flowers or rubbish I find on the streets. I’m trying to capture a moment in time, and the flowers are there to symbolise the blossoming of youth or spring or just life in general. The flowers are growing upwards just as we are as we go through life. The inspiration comes from all around me, for instance I found some used old toys outside my studio yesterday I collected them up to use in some way soon - and now that I’m living in the countryside I’m sure the objects I collect will also change.

🌾

A+E: What’s your Agony and what is your Ecstasy?

OF: I suppose my honest answer for Agony right now would be funds to get going again, it has cost me a bomb to set up the studio but you know… I’ll get there in the end. Call me simple but my all time Ecstasy would be an old pub session in summer time with wooden tables, good beer and good company.

Cornflake is now available to buy on the website with complimentary delivery in Ibiza.

When we say we’re havin’ it large, we mean we’re havin’ a Extra Large Dove 🕊️

Agony + Ecstasy sat down with award-winning sculptor and stone carver Dan Davids to delve into his vision and craft on creating his iconic Ecstasy and Pill stoneworks. Originally from Norwich in the UK, Davids works on each piece by hand in his studio having qualified as a professional stonemasonry in Bath.

A+E: Why did you decide to create the Dove XL of this scale and stature?

DD: When I think about going to Ibiza, its always about going large, going big. So in response to this impulse it made complete sense to indeed go large and carve the XL Dove. When in Ibiza its the only way to go.

A+E: Do you remember the first piece you ever made?

DD: I first made a stone pill when I was training to be a stone carver back in the early 90s, rave was at its height, everyone was loved up, I made a love heart!

A+E: What is the connection for you between ecstasy pills and stone work, is there a synergy you want to convey?

DD: Firstly, it’s the bright off white colour of Portland stone, that lends itself perfectly to describe most recognisable tablets. I’ve used Portland stone for over 20 years, it’s one of my favourite limestones to use for relief carvings and sculptures, as it’s so soft to carve.

Secondly it is it’s distinctive chalky texture. This is formed by small particles of sand or shell fragments, which became coated with layers of calcite as they were rolled around in shallow waters for millions of years. I met a stone carver in India called Varun who described the formation of stone as “frozen music’, I like the concept of both time and environment being encapsulated.

A+E: Lastly, what is your ‘Agony’ and what is your ‘Ecstasy’?

DD: My Agony is spending six weeks on a piece then finding it has a natural fault in the stone. My Ecstasy is seeing the reaction to my work on peoples faces. The provoking of memory, where they were, who they were with, the nostalgia of it all.

Dove XL is an Edition of 5 stoneworks and available in Ibiza and worldwide shipping.
