The Sistine Madonna by Raphael (1512-13)

Raphael was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. This painting Sistine Madonna is one of his most well-known works (especially the two cherubs on the bottom). It was an oil painted altarpiece commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1512 for the church of San Sisto, Piacenza.

Adoration of the Magi by Albrecht Durer (1504)

Albrecht Durer is probably most well-known for his woodcut prints, so I found it extra interesting to find this version of Adoration of the Magi painted by him. Durer was a printmaker, painter, and theorist of the German Renaissance. This piece was commissioned for the altar of Schlosskirche in Wittenberg by Frederick the Wise. Durer painted himself into the painting as one of the kings (the long-haired one in green).

After a long period of psychological crisis, Van Gogh had lost his confidence in himself, as a person and as a painter. For a long time, he felt useless and did not even dare to go outside. To build up his self-confidence again, he started copying prints – a common exercise for beginning painters.

This painting is a copy of a print by Jean-François Millet (1814-1875). Over the years, the colours have changed dramatically. The contrasts were originally much greater. It is now a bluish-green landscape, against which the black birds (crows or rooks) stand out strongly.

Ciphers and Constellations in Love with a Woman - Joan Miró - 1941

In January 1940, Miró began a series of twenty-three works on paper that later became known as The Constellations, of which this is an example. Composed on identically sized sheets of paper over twenty-one months, this remarkably poetic suite was created from January 1940 to September 1941, under the duress of World War II, when Miró and his family moved from France to his native Spain to avoid the advance of the N***s. About the “Constellations” he stated: “If the interplay of lines and colors does not expose the inner drama of the creator, then it is nothing more than bourgeois entertainment. The forms expressed by an individual who is part of society must reveal the movement of a soul trying to escape the reality of the present… . in order to approach new realities, to offer men the possibility of rising above the present.”
