in 1968, flight attendant Jane Harrison helped passengers escape from a burning aircraft close to London, UK. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross for heroism, the only woman to be directly awarded the medal for gallantry in peacetime.

Barbara Jane Harrison was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, on 24th May 1945 and worked as a flight attendant with BOAC. On 8 April 1968, the number two engine of BOAC Flight 712 caught fire and fell from the plane's port wing soon after it left Heathrow Airport.

The aircraft managed to land two and a half minutes later, but fire continued to engulf the wing and spread to the fuselage.

Jane and another flight attendant inflated the escape chute at the back of the plane but it became entangled. Her colleague had to climb down to free it for use and was unable to return to assist with the evacuation.

Jane stayed at her station and helped passengers to escape as fire ravaged the plane, encouraging them to jump and in some cases simply pushing them out to safety.

As the fire spread, escape from the rear of the aircraft became impossible and she led the remaining passengers to another exit. She refused to leave the plane to save herself and her body was found near that of a disabled pensioner, seated in one of the last rows. She was just 22 years old.

Jane is one of four women to have been directly awarded the George Cross for heroism, and the only one of the four not to have served with the Special Operations Executive in occupied France during Second World War.

A tree commemorating Jane’s bravery and sacrifice can be found close to Yeomanry Avenue at the Arboretum.

One of my goals this year is to commit to posting regularly on social media, which is something I have been meaning to do for about 2 years! As a nice beginning I thought I would introduce myself in this space:

👋 Hi, I’m Kim. I graduated with an Integrated Masters from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012 and have been working full time as an osteopath ever since.

✨I grew up in Bexhill and after an amazing opportunity to spend a year working as an osteopath in Canada 🇨🇦 I returned and set up my business in Battle and Bexhill in 2014.

✨I have completed post graduate courses in cranial osteopathy, western acupuncture, kineso-taping, and headache management to name but a few.

✨I tend to consider myself a ‘general practitioner’ in the osteopathy world, which basically means I am happy to treat everything from feet and ankles to jaws and headaches and everything in-between. But if you had to force my hand then necks are my favourite thing to treat.

✨I see my role as being a helping hand to your recovery. I can aid your body in recovering from an injury or help you manage a chronic condition alongside appropriate exercise, and lifestyle advice from diet, to stress management and pain management. I am just a piece in the puzzle of your recovery.

✨I’m a mum to a cheeky energetic three-year-old, and I am coming to the realisation that I need to do some cardiovascular exercise if I hope to keep up!

✨When I get some rare free time outside of work and mum life I like to bake, and do some DIY. Although my ambition in both areas far outweighs my skills levels! And I think I need to recommit to running!

✨If you’d like me to help you with any concerns you may be having, then feel free to contact me:

As senior cats, Oscar and Zico enjoy lounging, napping and quietly watching the world go by. Don't we all!

This bonded pair at Danaher Animal Home - RSPCA respond beautifully to a calm, gentle approach, making them perfect for a household with teenagers aged 15 and over.

Once they're feeling safe, happy and truly cherished, you'll even get the occasional burst of energy, showing their playful side.

Could you give them the loving home they deserve? https://bit.ly/3ZldydA

Sad news re several Line Dancers, we are an aging community! 😔
Rip John Sandham. Instructor and choreographer, originally from the North West UK, lived and taught here in Spain for many years.
Also Irene Hulse, one of my dancers for many years in Walkden and Worsley, Salford. M28.
A sad loss too her family and the dance community.
