Ever since it has dedicated its time to the promotion of emerging art. The project's main purpose was to create a nexus between London and Los Angeles.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF MY MIND was created at the Central Saint Martins MA Fine Art program in 2011, as an exhibition that would take place in Los Angeles (2012) and Madrid (2013). 'Journey to the Center of my Mind' was founded in 2012 becoming an all female contemporary art exhibition curated by artist Gala Knörr taking place at Historical Monument #157 in Los Angeles (California). Inviting th

e audience to immerse themselves within the creative visions of the selected artists, by witnessing their concerns and conceptual understanding of their physical placement within contemporary society; an analysis of human beings living within a metropolis of subcultures. Artists included Lola Rose Thompson, Chloe Sells, Amanda Charchian, Paz Lenchantin, Anne Lacheiner-Kuhn, Hayley Goodsell, Elsa Philippe, Gala Knörr and KC Bull. Holding screenings of videoart every evening followed performances by Guy Blakeslee, Old Testament, Feather Beard, Jeff Levitz and Nora Keyes. A second edition of the project was presented as a temporary exhibition at 'Bunkhouse' in the neighbourhood of Atocha in Madrid in 2013. The exhibition included works from Zelda Passini & Elsa Philippe, Giusy Pirrotta, Jwan Yosef, Lola Rose Thompson, Forrest Ann Podrat, Beth Fox, Gala Knörr and the late Konstanty Czartoryski.

'Journey to the Center of my Mind' went on to become a contemporary art blog and instagram whose aim was to follow up the works and exhibitions of the artists that initially took part of the project, slowly also becoming a platform for young emerging artists and galleries to showcase their projects.

“No Night on Fire” sits between moving images and writing to address the construction of narratives, the storytelling mechanisms of history, the idea of transformation through language, and images that shift and replicate across different moments. Drawing from various stories that dialogue with fire, a modular film unfolds—a film that remains from a trilogy of films reflecting on the act of seeing and listening, the connections between places and times, and the narrative potential of fiction.

A fire that plays between narrative and image: that fire without time, this fire that is fiction. The fire that is all fires, as in Cortázar. A hybrid space to reflect on the boundary between text and image. The event in the scene, the story in another voice, two different fires coexisting, and a narrative that wasn’t but still takes place.

‘An Alternate Ending to A Tale of Two Cities: Image and Text’

Entering Milly Skellington’s exhibition titled An Alternate Ending to a Tale of Two Cities one will encounter an immersive environment of images, texts, and objects that seem to belong both to a recent past and an emerging future. Named for
Charles Dickens’s 19th Century historical novel that chronicled the French Revolution and the subsequent Reign of Terror, the story recalls a society on the brink of a seemingly progressive transformation, simultaneously plagued by the folly of radical idealism. The title also alludes to Martin Kippenberger’s famed and final work The Happy End of Kafka’s Amerika, where the artist envisions the finale of the unfinished narrative as an installation mostly of workaday office furniture and mundane leisure activities. It’s not entirely clear how Skellington might rewrite Dickens’s celebrated magnum opus—situated now in modern day London, where the artist briefly attended Goldsmith College of Art, and his hometown Los Angeles instead of Revolution-era Paris—but considering the artist’s tongue-in-cheek persona that often humorously approaches exhibition-making through the lens of a fictitious blockbuster film producer, it seems Skellington plans to recreate an outrageous Hollywood ending for Dickens’s masterwork.

Pablo’s Birthday is pleased to present Claiming to Be Finding, a solo exhibition by Alice Quaresma. Within her practice, Quaresma abandons the assertion of objectivity and shifts the content of images into partially figurative, partially abstract collages. Her engagement with the photographic structure plays with the relationship between depth/flatness and representation/abstraction, using geometry as a universal way to play with objectivity. Quaresma investigates the limits of photography as a medium of truth and precision in relation to the condition of memory.

‘The Mythic Age’

Transformation is the central tenet of Naudline Pierre’s practice: evolution of the self, metamorphosis of the female form, escape from our earthly existence into the luminous unknown, and material oscillations from fresco-like dry brushing to aqueous gestures. Pierre paints scenes that are ever-shifting, in states of mystery and ecstatic potentiality. Her characters’ limbs and wings extend beyond the picture plane, as if to suggest that this atmospheric world, devoid of a horizon line, continues infinitely.

Pierre transforms and reinvigorates disparate art historical references that span centuries, pointedly looking back to artists who did not and could not imagine her as their viewer, yet share a desire to reinvent and reimagine the universe. In her newest works, Pierre references Baroque and French academic painting of the 1800s, which opened the door to modernity and the heretical embrace of iconography in the service of personal, political, and radical self-expression. She draws freely from this distinctly male, European legacy of image-making, forming an intergenerational line between artists of radically different backgrounds to refashion historical motifs for a new audience.

This new series of paintings and works on paper was produced during the artist’s pregnancy with her first child and throughout the postpartum period. During this transformative time, Llanos delved into dreaming as a medium for premonition and intuition. “I dreamt he was here in this world, and I discovered I was pregnant just a few days later.” Grappling with her inner world and the new life growing within her led Mercedes to evaluate new subject matter.

“The work I created during my pregnancy is very special. It marked the beginning of a change, a new sensitivity, and a different version of myself.”

Throughout her practice, Mercedes has explored the body both as an instrument and as a subject in her canvases. In this new series, this central theme is heightened by the conscious experience of her body’s transformation during pregnancy. Her engagement with large canvases becomes a confrontation with the solitude of painting and the profound connection of this unique relationship, much like the intimacy of pregnancy: “It’s the painting and then I—it’s us until it leaves the studio.” This physicality was both challenged and accentuated by this period, necessitating adjustments to her materials and process. “Painting became slower during pregnancy… Each piece took longer to complete, and some I finished after the baby was born.”

‘CryptoFIRE Degen’

‘In this latest installment Wang explores the embarrassment and humor of being in too deep, down the rabbit hole not just with crypto but technology addiction or even the avaricious nature of the art world. The speed is not in sync: memes are short in duration and disposable, her paintings are arduous and months-long; crypto changes value dramatically in a single day, the art world raises up talent and drops it within the same year. Our brains have been rewired to have short attention spans and an insatiable appetite for new content: we are supposed to spend hours gazing at an artwork in a museum to slowly chew through the layers of meaning and interest but instead we scroll fast through an auction catalogue and click to bid. Looking at Wang’s paintings of memes is like getting off a treadmill or hitting a sudden speed bump; we have to slow down but it is slightly nauseating.

Kim Hankyul’s project Forest_Sound_Motor_ Machine.mov is a multimedia installation that travels across dimensions and resolutions, reality and simulation, sound and visuals. The exhibition actively adapts dissonance as its main method of expression, questioning the truthfulness of media, that is, the platform of representation for culture and identities that we most familiarly encounter in our daily lives.

In terms of both visual and auditory aspects, the work utilises a broad spectrum of materials and technologies at hand, and repurpose them to serve for a plausible but necessarily failing imitation.

Curated by

David Bregenzer, Samuel Rauber and Jonas Weber founded in 2018 the collective Boyband CHIC. Through video performance, they question popular culture, especially pop music. In 2023, David and Samuel develop this project, reorienting their artistic practice as a duo towards installations combining video, sound, sculptures and readymades. Swiss Flex marks their first personal exhibition as NOSTAL Chic.

At KOMMET, the duo explores the concept of hyggelig, creating an environment at once strange and artificial. Hyggelig is a Danish term difficult to translate as it encompasses several notions linked to comfort and well-being. It evokes a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, where one feels good and safe. This word is often used to describe simple and pleasant moments such as being at home
surrounded by loved ones, enjoying a cosy atmosphere with lit candles, or savouring
a hot drink on a winter evening.
