A former Soviet security officer was convicted in France, lost property through a British civil-recovery case and spent years in confinement.
Then he began painting.
His name is Gheorghe Virtosu.
He did not produce decorative confessions or conventional prison art. He constructed an expanding body of abstraction concerned with power, religion, migration, historical personalities and the systems through which human beings organize identity.
Virtosu created the paintings. El Arte Monumental later began the more difficult work: determining whether those apparently separate images formed a coherent visual language.
Its research produced Systemic Abstraction, New Perfection and The Architecture of Humanity.
This is not a comfortable redemption story. Nor does art erase a person’s history.
It presents a more disturbing question: can a human being produce work larger than the life from which it emerged?
