Dear artists: Does this happen to you too?

I recently noticed how quickly I respond when asked a question. Because if I think back to being a child, you know, your name is called when an adult asks you something. In school, your teacher asks you a question and you are forced to respond. We are trained to respond.

But in this interview, I found it so inspiring that Jean Baptiste Basquiat thinks twice and decides NOT to answer. And I really admire this.

It’s something I’ve been reflecting on and want to improve in my own daily life. I’m not perfect. But to respond thoughtfully when asked a question and not anymore automatically, just because I’m used to giving a response.

I like to believe that by copying a painting, parts of it become part of me and stay with me when I create my own works. Bonus it’s deeper to connect with, notice details and memorise them deeply. Much more entertaining to me than taking pictures with a sh*tty mobile phone.

I find the only way to capture a subject truthfully is to never once lose the view of it, and translate what I see directly with my hands on paper. If you lose the bond with the subject you draw from memory - the memory of 3 seconds ago.
