Indonesian "City Pop" appeared in the late 70s and 80s at the height of the Asian tigers' economic boom. Heavily influenced by the Japanese "City Pop" incorporates elements of jazz, funk, bossanova and to a lesser extent more traditional influences such as keroncong or dangdut.The genre became popular with the growing middle class who craved modernity and sophistication while aspiring to be part of the urban elite. However, the majority of Indonesians living in rural areas did not connect with urban pop, opting instead for other popular styles such as Dangdut
