Oskana Linde’s debut album Aquatic and Other Worlds is a playful journey through a universe where science and music coexist. As a child growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, Linde played the piano for hours a day; but she was also drawn to the natural world: the sea, the rivers, the clouds, and the cosmos. She studied chemistry in college in the late ‘60s, preparing for a career as a researcher in the country’s oil industry. But while working at the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), Linde began exploring her passion for music, playing jazz, bossa nova, and pop music with various collaborators. Eventually, the constant exposure to toxic chemicals began taking a toll on her body. Buh Records

"What are some stereotypes of South American music that you would like the world to move past?

Speaking of South American electronic music, I feel there's a huge spectrum of genres, sonorities, collectives, labels, experiments etc that are being (and have been) manifested. From experimental compositions of the Ecuadorian artist Mesias Maiguashca (who studied with Stockhausen himself) to Mexico's Jorge Reyes, to labels like Peru's Buh Records, which in my opinion is the hottest label from the region at the moment, bringing to light a lot of sonic experiments from past and present, to contemporary collectives like Hiedrah, Tratratrax and Mamba Negra which are leading the front of an artistic and political movement through their parties. All this to mention the variety of flavors within a region that has sometimes been overlooked by media, discredited or stereotyped into vague genres. The exotic vision that the western media has about us is not accurate."

Excelentísma y precisa reseña del disco de Andrés Vargas Pinedo aparecida en el último número de la revista inglesa Songlines, gracias a Russell Slater!

The Peruvian Amazon was a hotbed of music in the 60s and 70s, but this collection make it clear that Western ears have only heard a fraction of the music that originated there. Even Analog Africa's
recent, and excellent, compilation of songs by Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical focused on his cumbia output, which has often been the case in the reissue market. This record, on the excellent Perú-based Buh Records, highlights the work of composer Pinedo in the 60s and 70s. Blinded at he age of three due to a nurse's error, he became a renowned violinist and quena (flute) player whose ensembles showcased a myriad of rhythms popular in Amazon: pandilla, marinera, changanacui, movido, sitaracuy. The common currency is their buoyancy and drive. On opener "Alegría en la selva", Pinedo imitates a bird's song with his lively quena, while "Flautero de la Montaña" has a beautiful pleading vocal melody and a relentless beat, though that's and accusation that could be thrown at a number of the songs here. What is surprising is a how, at times, this music has the swing of Celtic or Breton music, even on traditional melodies like "Punchacacho Tutacacho". It seems there's a lot more to be discovered.

Mesías Maiguashca is a relevant figure on the map of contemporary avant-garde composers. Born in Ecuador but currently based in Germany, he has been a composer who, since the 60s, would constantly expand his possibilities in fields such as electronic music (where he stands out as a pioneer), mixed works, expanded interdisciplinary pieces and the creation of unconventional instruments, where the encounter between his country of origin’s popular folkloric tradition and the new European music has produced a universe of tension, as fascinating as it is startling.
