𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣. For people who travel as much as we do, hubby and me are surprisingly good at staying put. We meander between Spain, the Netherlands and England like a river that has long stopped worrying about a straight line, so from the outside it probably looks as though we’re constantly on the move. But really, the moving is only the bit in between. Once we arrive somewhere, we completely and utterly settle in, make the place our home and start living in the days.

I’ve never been very good at overly structured, overplanned days. I need space around things. Time to potter. Time where nothing is tugging too hard at my sleeve and I can hear myself think or, even better, stop thinking quite so much. 😉

Those are my most soulful days. I paint, cook, walk the dog, feed the cats, tend to the garden, do some remote work, read my book, make a cup of tea, often with the sound of Paul playing his guitar somewhere in the background. 🥰 🎶 Nothing terribly remarkable, yet there’s a deep contentment in having time on my hands and being able to spend it in my own way.

The mind would happily fill every empty pocket of a day if we let it. There is always one more useful thing we could be doing. But the soul seems to want something else: quiet, spaciousness, a slower rhythm. We need this unclaimed space not simply because it feels pleasant, but because it gives our inner life somewhere to breathe and I think it helps keep us steady when life isn’t nearly so gentle.

So yes, we travel from place to place, yet what makes me happiest when we get there is staying on the nest. Making myself at home. Living in my own time. Less mind, more soul.

This isn’t a guided paint-along where we all follow the same steps and end up with a similar painting. Those workshops are wonderful in their own right, but that’s not what the Play Jam is about.

The Play Jam is an invitation to get to know your own creative and wild voice. To notice the tiny inner nudges, the impulses, the inner desire and the curiosity that quietly want to lead the way.

It takes practice, because along the way we’ll often bump into the part of ourselves that wants certainty, control or approval.

But every time we gently move through one of those barriers, we come a little closer to creating something that’s unmistakably our own.

That’s where we touch our innate Joy.

So don’t wait for inspiration.

Just show up as you are.

We’ll take it from there.

“𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙨.”

That was a comment someone left on one of my paintings the other day.

My first thought?

Well… that’s exactly the point.

Because what you’re looking at isn’t the finished painting.

You’re looking at the very beginning.

Every painting starts for me with the pure expression of accumulated energy. Not with an idea or a carefully thought-out plan.

Stress sitting in my shoulders. Grief lingering in my chest. Joy buzzing beneath my skin. Thoughts endlessly looping around my head. Feelings that don’t even have words yet.

Just… life.

Before anything harmonious can emerge, all of that needs somewhere to go. It needs to leave the body and find its way onto the paper or canvas.

𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙. 𝙐𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙. 𝙐𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙.

So yes… it looks like a complete and utter mess.

Because it is.

Those first layers aren’t random. They’re accumulated energy and nameless emotions made visible.

I’ve realised this part feels completely natural to me now. But for many people it’s the hardest stage of creating—not because they can’t paint, but because it’s the moment they’re invited to let go of control.

Everything in us wants to tidy it up, make it look better and get back to certainty.

I know that impulse well.

Painting has taught me something I never expected: when my mind wants certainty, I listen… but I no longer hand over the steering wheel.

I keep painting.

I’ve discovered that chaos isn’t the opposite of creation.

It’s the fertile ground from which authentic creation grows.

That’s exactly what we’ll explore in this Saturday’s Paint Play Jam. Not how to make a beautiful painting, but how to cultivate what I like to call Chaos Courage—the willingness to stay with the unknown long enough for something deeply honest to emerge.
