As our short film "CALM, Horacio Quiroga’s Last Tale" prepares to screen at the Annecy Festival, we wanted to share a look behind the scenes at the creation of its protagonist and the reason this short film exists: Horacio Quiroga.
He is not only its main character; in a way, he is also its author. His stories run through the entire film, and moments inspired by his own biography led us to imagine what might have been his final tale. 📝
Designing Horacio meant creating a character who could survive many transformations: as a cut-out paper puppet, as a volumetric stop-motion figure, as a 2D animated drawing, and as a 3D model. The challenge was for each version to feel distinct, while still being unmistakably him.
To bring Quiroga to life, we had the singular eye of paula boffo and Gervasio Canda , our wonderful art directors, who helped shape a Horacio that could move between materials, techniques, and worlds.
