فاتح المدرس ( 1922- 1999)
ولد بالقرب من مدينة حلب شمال سوريا، عاش في منطقة ريفية بين الفلاحين العرب والأكراد والتركمان. أظهر المدرس موهبة في الرسم في سن مبكرة ، وتتلمذ على يد معلمي الفن منيب النقشبندي وغالب سالم وهبي الحريري الذين علموه المبادئ. عام 1940 ذهب إلى لبنان لتعلم الإنجليزية وعاد لسورية ليعمل مدرس للغة الإنجليزية ومعلم للفنون. وفي عام 1956 التحق بأكاديمية الفنون في روما (Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma) وطور أسلوبه المميز في الرسم، وفي عام 1972 حصل على الدكتوراه من أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في باريس. درَّس في كلية الفنون الجميلة في جامعة دمشق وأصبح عميدها حتى عام 1993.
استمرّ فاتح المدرِّس بالرسم حتى وفاته، وشاركت أعماله في معارض عالمية مثل بينالي البندقية، وساو باولو، ومعرض نيويورك الفني الدولي، ومعرض الفن العربي المعاصر في باريس، وبينالي سيؤول وبينالي القاهرة.
عام 1952 شارك في معرض الفنانين السوريين بدمشق وفاز بالجائزة الأولى في الرسم. حصل على العديد من الجوائز منها الميدالية الذهبية من مجلس الشيوخ الإيطالي عام 1962 ، وجائزة الشرف في بينالي ساو باولو عام 1963 ، وجائزة الدولة للفنون الجميلة بدمشق عام 1986. بالإضافة إلى كتاباته ، فقد كتب كتابًا من ثلاثة أجزاء عن تاريخ الفن عام 1954.
وأعماله مقتناة من قِبل مؤسسات عديدة منها المتحف البريطاني، والمتحف العربي للفن الحديث-الدوحة، والمتحف الوطني ومتحف دُمّر بدمشق، ومؤسسة دلول للفنون – بيروت، ومجموعة الإبراهيمي للفنون -الأردن. أُقيم معرض استعادي لأعماله في معهد العالم العربي في باريس عام 1995.

Fateh Moudarres (1922–1999) was born near the city of Aleppo in northern Syria and grew up in a rural region among Arab, Kurdish, and Turkmen peasants. He demonstrated an early talent for drawing and studied under art teachers Mounib Al-Naqshbandi, Ghalib Salem, and Wahbi Al-Hariri, who taught him the fundamentals. In 1940, he traveled to Lebanon to learn English, after which he returned to Syria to work as an English and art teacher.
In 1956, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma), where he developed his distinctive signature style. Later, in 1972, he earned his PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University, eventually serving as its dean until 1993.
Fateh Moudarres continued painting until his death. His works were featured in international exhibitions worldwide, including the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Art Biennial, the New York International Art Show, the Contemporary Arab Art Exhibition in Paris, the Seoul Biennial, and the Cairo Biennale.
In 1952, he participated in the Syrian Artists Exhibition in Damascus, where he won First Prize in Painting. He went on to receive numerous honors, including the Gold Medal from the Italian Senate in 1962, an Honor Award at the São Paulo Biennial in 1963, and the State Prize for Fine Arts in Damascus in 1986. Beyond his visual art, he was also a writer, authoring a three-volume history of art in 1954.
His works are included in the collections of major institutions, including the British Museum, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Doha), the National Museum and the Doumar Museum (Damascus), the Dalloul Art Foundation (Beirut), and the Ibrahimi Collection (Jordan). A comprehensive retrospective of his work was held at the Arab World Institute (Institut du Monde Arabe) in Paris in 1995.
