Khyria Mazin Khyria Mazin is the last Mazin dancing and teaching her family's unique style of traditional dance from the saiid (upper Egypt).

Khyria is the last Mazin to dance her family's unique traditional dance style, at least since the 1980s.
She began dancing at the age of 14 with her older sister, with whom she designed and made costumes for their performances.
She has traveled throughout Egypt to promote her art and carries her family name with honor.
She has performed at many events such as local weddings, sebouah celebrations, mawlid, international dance festivals, hotels, and online workshops.
Most of her students are foreigners, but she has occasionally mentored Egyptian dancers from far away.
Her goal is to keep the traditional art alive.

However I have noticed FB's automations have set most new videos posted to allow ads (which I have never allowed here before knowingly) so if you are running a page you may want to check your settings too and adjust accordingly.

Someone is trying to make money off of this page and it's contents, or Facebook's auto detection is really off. When I tried to file a dispute the form conveniently "errored" upon submission, and now it seems to have disappeared entirely except, this page makes no money, that's not it's purpose, yet someone else is claiming to own, and is earning ad revene from Khyria and her band---TRADITIONAL MUSIC PLAYED LIVE BY TRADITONAL MUSICIANS!!! This is the latest level of meta's insane AI. I dont know if I should just remove the video or what?

During one of my casual visits with Khyria last year it finally occurred to me to ask her if she had seen any "male ghawazi", and she relayed to me a story about Afifi who worked in the villages near Luxor when she was starting in dance.

Historically male dancers in Egypt have been known by the terms "Khawal" or "Gink", but aside from being a bit archaic these are both considered derogatory terms so it's more polite to use "Raqas" (Raqasa is the female equivalent term for dancer).

I want to iterate that although translating this conversation as accurately as possible necessitated heavy use of "he/him" prounouns, it's quite clear that Afifi was living outside the typical gender expression of the culture, and I found Khyriaโ€™s attitude about this surprisingly nonchalant. She characterizes Afifi to help me understand her words clearly because my Arabic especially at this time was quite limited, and is not meant in a mean-spirited way, but I do understand that it could be upsetting.

I have shared this conversation to provide information about a performer we might otherwise not have known about, and to expand our framework for the presence of male, trans and other gendered expressions within the world of traditonal entertainment, specifically in Upper Egypt.
