Often overlooked due to her more familiar half-sister Inji, and her tragically short life and career, Zohra Efflatoun’s (1936-1978) artistic exploits were not limited merely to picturesque scenes and topics, but often involved more unconventional subjects like factories, infrastructures, residential routes and cemeteries.

Her style demonstrates quick brush work and a skillful palette and application of color, giving the viewer a sense of serenity and cheerfulness. This particular work is especially evident of these qualities, part of the gallery’s permanent collection, it is an impressionist rendition of a riverbank panorama. The artist captures the setting using a strikingly pleasing contrast of a modest row of moored flamingo-colored oar boats bobbing in the light currents of the deep blue Upper Egyptian Nile waters, as quaint figures on sailboats can be seen in the distance, enveloped on either end by lush stretches of green shoreline.

The start of Malin Juntikka’s journey in art was an unforgettable evening filled with dialogue, contemplation and heartwarming support from friends, art lovers and passers by.

Our cherished role of supporting Egypt’s young artists is perhaps the most rewarding of all, and in providing this platform to Malin we have allowed her to share her precious art with the general public. Bittersweet in that this exhibition marks her swan song here in Egypt, yet it is undeniably the beginning of a glittering career in art that we are infinitely proud to be a part of.

Congratulations Malin Juntikka, the girl from Härnösand who fell in love with Egypt, and who made Egypt fall in love with her.

The works in this collection span a variegated scope of contemporary social conflicts that both bridge and diverge the two distinct worlds that currently co-exist within Malin Juntikka, the ‘here and now’ of Egypt, and the ‘there and then’ of Sweden.

The core intention of Malin’s work is an incredibly complex venture, and is replete with layers of meaning and purpose, mirroring those of the paint on her canvases. In its most distilled form, Malin’s art is the consummate amalgamation of philosophy and art.

One of our main goals and commitments at Safarkhan is in supporting Egypt’s young artists. We hope that you can join us in this rewarding initiative by treating yourself to the experience of Swedish social-realist painter Malin Juntikka’s first solo exhibition which we are so proud to be hosting this coming Wednesday from 6pm!

Narrated by the artist;

There once was a big motorway that ran between two big cities. One day, a newly constructed museum was going to have a spectacular opening ceremony. Presidents and royalties were invited. Some roads were closed and it became difficult for the traffic on the big motorway to flow. There was a traffic jam. As soon as the cars joined the traffic jam, everyone in the car exited. All of a sudden, a community had emerged on the motorway! When the cars further ahead started moving later, everyone applauded and jumped back into the cars.

Narrated by the artist;

There once was a building on the outskirts of a big city. The building had been troubled with water problems for a long time. The apartment on the eleventh floor was the most troubled. During the nights, the comrades of the building gathered to solve the water problem. Some nights, they called in a plumber. Then everyone worked according to the instructions of the plumber. Even on this night, someone had come up with the final water solution, like every other night. The comrades of the building and the plumber worked for several hours. When the system of water pipes was complete, they turned on the water motor on the eleventh floor. Nonetheless, the two water tanks on the roof haven’t been filled this night either.

Alexandrian sculptor and Safarkhan resident artist Alfonse Louis is a master of mediums, predominantly a woodworker he embellishes his creations with metals, beads, mosaics, painting, glass and more, epitomizing the ideal of what true sculpting embodies.

We see in his unique creations a studious amalgamation of aspects, markers and motifs drawn from Coptic, Islamic, Greco-Roman and Pharaonic civilizations, which he develops with a compositional method that is faithfully reminiscent of the artforms of these ancient cultures. Above all, the significance of Alfonse Louis’ art lies in its steadfast veneration and rectification of many of these forgotten and essential forms of foundational art, from which all other art was borne.

Salah Abdel Kerim, who Safarkhan consider’s Egypt’s most versatile Modernist, was shapeshifter of meanings and materials, yet he also gave form to even the voids between life and death, ruin and resurrection, memory and myth. In doing so, he was not simply one of the pioneers of Egyptian modernism; he was arguably the chief architect who forged it.

Shaker El Maadawy’s work straddles the boundaries between the abstract and figurative, with many of his soothing watercolor painting displaying the illusions or outlines of dreamlike ethereal figures that are simultaneously at one with their surroundings.

These figures are almost entirely feminine in form, and they are often seamlessly incorporated into the background contents or other elements of his paintings, like plant life or animals in the tranquility of grazing bulls and resting doves.
