Shwa Shwa Theatre is pleased to announce our upcoming production of The Hairy Ape by Eugene O'Neill.

We're looking forward to seeing you at our premiere season in December at Canberra Theatre Centre.

A man told he’s an animal. An animal discovering what it means to be human. 🦍
Step into a raw, physical and visually explosive world where workers, machines, crowds and animals collide. Eugene O’Neill’s expressionist classic The Hairy Ape is reimagined for today in a powerful story of class, identity, freedom and the search for belonging.
Funny, unsettling and fiercely alive, this is theatre that asks one big question: what makes us human?

Updated Casting Call – The Hairy Ape (2 roles available)
Shwa Shwa Theatre is seeking a female actor and a male actor (playing age 18–40) to join the cast of our upcoming production of The Hairy Ape by Eugene O'Neill, premiering at the Courtyard Studio, Canberra Theatre Centre, this December.
We're looking for a female actor to play Mildred—a young upper-class American woman who attempts to challenge social norms by venturing into the world of industrial workers.

We're also looking for a male actor to play Long—a sprightly sailor and and outspoken Socialist, both of whom challenge the lead character with their ideas around class and society.

As part of our ensemble, both successful actors will also perform multiple supporting roles throughout the production.

This is a physically driven ensemble production, so we're particularly interested in performers who enjoy collaborative creation, movement-based theatre and bold physical storytelling.
Rehearsals begin in September, leading into our December season. Rather than holding formal auditions, we're inviting expressions of interest and will arrange a relaxed chat/interview with shortlisted applicants.

If you're interested, please email director Sammy Moynihan at [email protected]. We'd be happy to send you the full rehearsal schedule and answer any questions.
We'd love to hear from you!

The Shwa Shwa Theatre team recently wrapped our 2025 creative development for The Hairy Ape, and the work continues to sit with us; wild, physical, tender, and full of that unmistakable Shwa Shwa energy.

Our ensemble threw themselves into the process with enormous trust and generosity, and the industry showing at the end of the week was a true highlight. It was thrilling to share a glimpse of this world with peers and colleagues, and to feel the excitement around where this piece is heading.

Here’s a little sneak peek of the show so far, e can’t wait to keep building this beast!

This Creative Development was funded by the ACT Government through their Arts Activity Funding.
