A global rarity in 17th-Century
🌾 Kalamkari
Take a look at the intricate details of this cotton cover (_rumal_), an extraordinary example of Indian kalamkari artistry from the first half of the 17th century.
Created using a meticulous multi-step process—where natural dyes and wax resists were hand-applied using a bamboo stylus (_kalam_)—this textile shows us the skill of early master artisans.
Native to the Americas, turkeys were unknown in India until Portuguese traders brought them to the Mughal court of Emperor Jahangir in the early 1600s. Its appearance there shows how rapidly local traditions integrated global influences.
