The first cat video ever recorded was shot in 1894, in Thomas Edison's studio, and it is exactly as stupid as anything on the internet today.

It runs about twenty seconds. Two cats stand up on their hind legs in a tiny roped ring wearing tiny gloves and paw at each other while a man leans in from the side. That is the entire film.

Edison's team shot it inside the Black Maria, the tar-paper studio in West Orange, New Jersey where motion pictures were basically invented, and this is what they pointed the camera at.

Tolstoy wrote these entries in 1858, when he was about 30 years old and still years away from writing War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

He had already served in the Crimean War and established himself as a promising young writer, but his diaries reveal someone constantly trying to impose rules and purpose on his own life. He kept detailed journals from his youth, recording his ambitions, failures, habits and attempts at self-improvement.

I love just how human these diary entries are. One day, Tolstoy apparently figured out the meaning of life. The next day, he was too tired to do any of it.
