ADHD isn’t just “can’t sit still.”
Sometimes it looks like a child who can tell you every tiny detail about their favourite game… but forgets the instruction you gave two minutes ago.
It looks like school shoes disappearing five minutes before leaving the house.
It looks like “I’m coming!” while still not moving, because starting the task feels impossible.
It looks like huge emotions over something that seems small, time passing differently, interrupting without meaning to, or melting down after holding it together all day.
It can look like laziness, rudeness or defiance from the outside.
But often, it’s working memory, executive functioning, sensory overload, impulsivity, time blindness, low self-esteem, and a nervous system working overtime.
Children with ADHD don’t need adults to assume the worst.
They need support, patience, clear routines, one instruction at a time, visual reminders, calm responses, and people who notice their effort — not just the outcome.
The more we understand ADHD beyond hyperactivity, the more children can stop feeling “naughty” or “too much” and start feeling understood.
