This December I'm opening up my personal studio to 7 lucky students for my Head Drawing Workshop.

My name's Daniel Williams, and I've been a professional artist and art instructor for the past seven years. I learned how to draw and paint from local masters, online courses, and self-guided studies. In my time as an artist, I've created a little bit of everything: monsters, trees, animals, robots-- you name it. But the best arena for practice, in my personal opinion, has been the subject of the human head. Why is that?

Drawing is a balancing act. It's a mental practice and a learned skill. At any given moment, an artist may simultaneously be thinking about color, composition, value, line-weight, proportions, perspective, anatomy, or any other fundamental. But, it doesn't have to be so overwhelming. The head is an amazing subject because it allows you to apply your intuitive tastes to a familiar subject that you see every single day. When you draw the head, you practice fundamentals that can be applied to almost any other subject. You can isolate and combine these fundamentals at your own pace, with your own intent.

What should you expect from my course?
This course is designed for beginner and intermediate levels. The classes are going to be mostly taught in English. Puedo manejar el español, pero solo hasta cierto punto. I'll be teaching a few formulaic approaches to drawing portraiture that deal with proportions, perspective, and the underlying anatomy of the face. We'll be working solely on drawing, which means you'll only need the bare necessities: a sketchbook, a pencil, and an eraser. Some parts to drawing the head can be intensive, but with a little bit of your own patience and my encouragement, at the very least, I guarantee that you'll leave this workshop with a stronger appreciation and understanding of portraiture.

If you're interested in learning a formulaic approach to drawing the head, please consider registering for my course. Reservations for seats are first come first serve. If you would like to request additional details or sign up, please shoot me a DM or email [email protected].

(If you can't make the class, or if you prefer one-on-one instruction, feel free to ask me about my private lessons!)

Check out my upcoming Drawing Fundamentals Course at idiomART!

In this three-part, lecture-based series of classes, students will learn the foundation of drawing and sketching. Each one week session is designed to build off of the information in previous sessions. We’ll begin by discussing how the rules of perspective allow us to imagine objects and represent the world around us. Then, we’ll spend a week applying these rules of perspectives to the different objects and textures in a basic line drawing class. Finally, we’ll use what we’ve learned to simplify the complex form of the human head. Each lecture will contain live demonstrations in which I’ll explain both my personal thought process as I approach drawing each subject and the information that I’ve gathered on my self-driven, educational art journey. These courses are designed to help advance aspiring artists from the beginner level to intermediacy.

ABRIDGED SYLLABUS

Week 1 Perspective:
Perspective drawing is an illusion based on a set of clear rules that govern our sight. It’s a fundamental that many learners tend to stumble towards intuitively, relying on mileage to shape their drawings. Personally, I found that my drawings didn’t improve until I studied how the rules of perspective “carve” and “model” the 3D shapes of my subjects. And, it’s exactly this revelation that I wish to share with you. In this course we’ll study beginner and intermediate perspective techniques and terminology in order to establish a strong understanding of how we create volume and depth with lines on a flat sheet of paper. We’ll visit simple analogies (like train tracks converging as they approach the horizon line) and more complex techniques that were used by the old masters (perspective grids, dividing and multiplying space, constructing ellipses, and more).

Week 2 Drawing Fundamentals:
Now that we have a firm understanding of how we can represent volume and depth, it’s time to apply this to the world around us. As we draw, we should consider line quality, light and shadow, texture, form, contour, and a number of other techniques. This can be overwhelming, but the goal is to internalize the fundamentals through a forgiving environment of practice and repetition. In this course, we’ll delve into a number of different exercises that will build up confidence in our draftmenship. There will be one or two homework assignments in which we’ll discuss how you can improve upon and incorporate these techniques in your work.

Week 3 Drawing the Human Head:
The head is one of the most complex forms of the human body. But today, artists have more of an advantage than in any other preceding period of time. Throughout history, many artists and anatomists have broken down the human head into digestible proportions, simplified 3D forms, and constructive drawing formulas. As modern day artists, we have an entire body of knowledge behind us to guide us in creating beautiful drawings and portraits. In this course, we’ll learn some of these formulas and learn how to create expressive portraits with character and emotion.
