Cuenca is full of hidden gardens and courtyards. I am sure you often walk right past them without even realizing these gems exist right in the heart of the city.

These patios and interior gardens are a legacy of the colonial era. They are one of the hallmarks of traditional Spanish architecture. Let me show you my favorites and tell you their fascinating stories.

🕰️ [ANTIQUE SHOPS & MUSEUM TOUR] 🛋️

Let’s start this tour with a museum of antiques, tucked away in Cuenca. This family, which has been collecting antiques for generations, has turned their home into a big museum brimming with their treasures. It’s impressive!

Next, I will take you to a beautiful shop that imports antiques from the Netherlands and Europe. Then, we will visit another one located in a huge historic house, featuring furniture and objects imported from all over the world (India, France, US...). If you are looking for unique items, you are in for a treat!

🫖 [ARTESA CERAMICS FACTORY TOUR] 🪴

Last week, I visited the factory of the famous ceramic brand ARTESA. What a wonderful surprise! It’s a really exciting place!

So I arranged a guided tour in English that will last about an hour and a half. We will start by touring the huge production area. We will have the chance to watch the artisans paint, draw, mold, sculpt, fire… as well as learn about the many other roles performed by these 35 employees, most of whom are women.

Next, we will visit the Artesa museum, which traces its entire history, from its founding in 1971 by the renowned Eduardo Vega. We will see the brand’s iconic pieces and how its styles have evolved over time.

We will wrap up the tour with a snack (a sandwich, a treat and a drink). You will then be free to explore the beautiful shop, where you will receive a 10% discount on all your purchases—exclusively during this tour.
You will also have access to the “bodega,” where you’ll receive 50% to 75% off items from past collections. Plus, you’ll get 25% off items with minor imperfections.

🖼️ [ART GALLERIES TOUR] 👩🏼‍🎨

After a six-year career in Dubai and exhibitions around the world, Coco Valdez is opening his art gallery in Cuenca.
An artist, producer, and director, he blends traditional art with contemporary tools such as mixed reality. In doing so, he offers us an innovative vision and reaffirms the infinite possibilities of artistic expression.

Next, we will visit Claudia Fuentes, a young Cuban woman, at her gallery, which showcases Latin American female artists.
Claudia is herself an artist and illustrator and works for an American feminist magazine, among other projects. You are about to meet someone truly extraordinary.

PS: It's a five-minute walk between the two galleries. There are 30 steps to go down.

Juana will tell you about her passion for flowers and gardening, and you can even buy the ones you like. At unbeatable prices!

She will make us some homemade tea using flowers from her garden, along with some homemade cake.

🎨 [ARTIST STUDIO TOUR - FAUSTO BRAVO] 👨🏼‍🎨

When Fausto Bravo was 12 years old, he went to the Cajas with his family, none of whom were artists. He picked up some clay and thought “I can create something with this.” He molded a bull which by morning had fallen apart. So he went to the universities to find an art teacher who would show him how to preserve the pieces he made.

For many years, Fausto sculpted clay. He was well known for his figures with oversized hands and feet. In recent years, Fausto has devoted himself to wood carving and painting.

We will begin with a tour of Maestro Bravo's public works in the historic center of Cuenca (15 minutes of walking in total).

We will then pay a visit to Fausto’s studio, where you will meet the artist and see his exceptional body of current works.

👨🏼‍🎨 [THE MASTERS TOURS - EDUARDO SEGOVIA] 🏺

Eduardo Segovia is probably the best known artist in Cuenca and with good reason. He is and has been a mentor to many of the young artists and is a friend to all the artists on my Masters tours.
He is the Grand-father of the Cuenca art scene whose iconic work rescued a beloved neighborhood.

Let’s start our tour in the historic pottery district, where Segovia murals abound. There, you will meet the Maestro and visit his incredible studio which contains his current body of impressive ceramic works and paintings.

Maestro Segovia will tell you that he finds creativity in his dreams, where he draws inspiration from the beings and creatures he’s come across during undersea and interplanetary travels.

In short, you will meet a truly unique person and a truly great artist.

☀️ [FOOD, NATURE & ANTIQUES IN CHALLUABAMBA] 🌸

Let’s start with a visit to the Museo de la Gastronomia, which, as you will see in my video below, is about more than just food. There, you will discover the treasures this place has to offer, including a huge house-museum dedicated to Ecuador and its customs, a café-restaurant, a large garage filled with antiques, beautiful natural surroundings, animals…

We will then visit Maria in her shop, where she sells kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and apple cider vinegar—all made naturally by her. She also sells all kinds of natural bulk foods, at very good prices!

Just a few steps away, we will visit Rocío and Eduardo’s charming home. They are true antique enthusiasts who spend their time hunting down treasures to resell. You can even ask them to find a specific item for you. They also have many plants for sale.

Next, I will take you to Andrés’s bakery, where he and his family bake sourdough bread as well as other treats.

We will wrap up by exploring a newly created area filled with cafés and restaurants (Peruvian, Argentine, Mexican, Italian, etc.). You can have lunch at the restaurant of your choice and end your meal with the incredible pastries from Panasia (French and Asian desserts). Your meal is not included in the tour price.

When you moved to Cuenca, did you ever imagine you’d have the chance to take part in a painting workshop led by the renowned Maestro Jorge Chalco?

Bonjour Cuenca has put together this experience just for you!
You will enjoy this exclusive moment in the Maestro’s new gallery. Jorge Chalco will introduce you to his works and discuss the evolution of his process and themes over the course of 50 year career.

Then, we will begin the painting lesson. The Maestro will guide you in creating your own work of art.
You may draw inspiration from Chalco's art. You are also welcome to bring photos you like for inspiration and things you would like to paint (this is not required).

🎨 [ARTISTS' EXHIBITION TOUR] 🖼️

Let me introduce you to 3 exhibitions by artists I greatly admire, each with a very different style.

Let’s start with Diego Jaramillo’s impressive exhibition. He was invited by the Museo de Arte Moderno to celebrate his 50-year career as an artist.
He is coming especially to give us a guided tour.

Next up is an exhibition featuring Catalina Carrasco, Azucena Vintimilla, and Sebas Carrasco, a family of multidisciplinary artists. We will be exploring their new paintings, collages and works on metal.

Let’s wrap up with a visit to Christian Tigre’s exhibition and his new series of paintings, which introduce us to Andean and Amazonian legends. A fascinating journey to get to know Ecuador better.
