We’re excited to introduce Kulturentik Essays

A year and a half ago, we launched our Substack to share longer versions of our posts. Over the past few months, we’ve decided to take it a step further by writing original essays exploring the questions and topics that matter to us, while creating a space to exchange ideas with you.

Our first essay reflects on what it means to create under conflict, and how artists become witnesses to history through their work.

AFCON has always been more than football. It gave voice to nations living under colonial weight, offering pride, visibility, and dignity when the world refused to look. Nations built belief, identity, and unity through the game. Algeria 1990 stands as a turning point: hosting, winning and helped showing Africa building itself from the ground up, using football as proof of existence and resistance.

La CAN a toujours été bien plus que du football. Elle a donné une voix à des nations vivant sous le poids du colonialisme, offrant fierté, visibilité et dignité lorsque le monde refusait de regarder. Les nations ont bâti une unité et une identité à travers le jeu. L’Algérie 1990 marque un tournant : en accueillant et en remportant la compétition, elle a contribué à montrer une Afrique qui se construit par elle-même, utilisant le football comme preuve d’existence et de résistance.

لم تكن كأس الأمم الإفريقية يومًا مجرد بطولة لكرة القدم، بل كانت دائمًا أكثر من ذلك بكثير. لقد منحت صوتًا لأمم كانت ترزح تحت وطأة الاستعمار، ووفّرت لها الفخر والظهور والكرامة حين كان العالم يرفض أن ينظر إليها. فمن خلال اللعبة، بنت الشعوب إيمانًا بذاتها، وهوية، ووحدةً وطنية.
وتُمثّل الجزائر 1990 محطةً فارقة؛ فباستضافتها للبطولة وتَتويجها باللقب، أسهمت في إبراز إفريقيا التي تبني نفسها بنفسها، مستخدمةً كرة القدم دليلاً على الوجود وشكلًا من أشكال المقاومة.
