Open call for artist residency in India!

We would like to take this opportunity to extend our greetings once again, with the hope that everyone is staying warm and safe in the New Year.

During this period, although Spaces-31 has not been able to organize exhibitions in our main gallery space, we have continued to stay actively involved through curatorial services, exhibition planning support, and other related services. We have also been pleased to collaborate with those who reached out to us—whether to organize projects together or to preserve and access contemporary art books, zines, tapes, and CDs for reference and collection. Being able to stay connected and work together in these ways has been truly heart-warming.

At present, our largest gallery space, Exhibition Hall 1, will be temporarily closed as it undergoes renovation.
However, for those who would like to introduce their friends, colleagues, or visitors to contemporary art in Yangon, a selection of works from Spaces-31 will continue to be on display in our smaller gallery space, Exhibition Hall 2. Visitors are welcome to view the exhibition by making an appointment in advance.

☄️We’re pleased to share that Z1320AA by Thu Myat has been extended until 30 November 2025 at Myanm/art and Spaces-31, Yangon.

Originally set to close in late October, the exhibition will remain on view for another month—inviting visitors to spend more time within its constellation of science, faith, and illusion.

☄️“The title encodes this world. Z invokes Zeus—one of the largest and most powerful bodies among planets and asteroids, metaphorically acting as a protector within the asteroids, much like the god Zeus in the mythical cosmos. It is deliberately omitted from the paintings to function instead as a symbolic force. 20 corresponds to one of the artist’s initials, “T,” and 13 to “M,” drawn from astrological calculation, while AA signifies both Artist and Astronomy. These elements structure the three halls: Z, the gravitational center, gathers most asteroid paintings except Zeus; 1320 stages the crossing of Thu Myat’s personal trajectory with science and belief; and AA extends across the final halls as spaces of interaction, where questions of faith, measurement, and survival remain open.”

🛹[Makise Kurisu iv] Z1320AA inhabits a schizophrenic condition. It does not ask whether astrology is “true” or science “sufficient”; it performs their circling. An asteroid is both object and omen; Fig. 1, A Pre-Recorded Universe is both speculation and confession. Faith and disbelief do not resolve; they orbit one another—our interpretations, at best, provisional assumptions held against the dark. Whether “the gods are equations misremembered” or “equations are gods mistranslated” is less provocation than description: both operate in practice, often within the same subject.

🛹Perhaps what remains is neither belief nor disbelief but haecceity—the this-ness of each encounter with the sky. Each asteroid, each horoscope, each prayer is irreducible in its specificity and yet already mediated, folded into illusions, algorithms, or equations. A Cartesian impulse would peel back appearances to locate certainty underneath; the exhibition suggests otherwise: the mediated impression—the diagram, meme, horoscope, whispered bargain to the stars—is what holds. Illusion is not failure; it is a condition of orientation.

👾Thu Myat (b. 1986) is a Yangon-based visual artist whose practice spans graffiti, painting, new media, and large-scale public works. Emerging from Yangon’s urban art scene, he is recognized as one of the leading figures to introduce and develop graffiti as a contemporary art form in Myanmar. A member of the OKP Crew and co-founder of the design company Plus Ka Gyia, he has stood at the intersection of underground culture and institutional recognition for nearly two decades.

🌘His practice is characterized by experimentation with medium and scale—ranging from new painting techniques and paper-based works to large sculptural forms. Often infused with satire and sarcasm, his works question societal norms while engaging with themes of urban identity, public space, and cultural transition. By employing humor and irony, he reframes social critique in ways that are both accessible and subversive.

☄️Since his first solo exhibition at New Zero Art Space, Yangon (2011), where he introduced live graffiti sessions into the gallery context, Thu Myat has exhibited widely in Myanmar and abroad. Key exhibitions include Forward-Backward: Second Wave Eight Myanmar Contemporary Art Exhibition, H Project Space, H Gallery, Bangkok (2011); Urbane, Folklore-Kunstraum, Innsbruck (2013), Myanmar New Wave: Pop Art Revisited, Singapore (2017) and All Too Human, Myanm/art, Yangon. In 2017, he was commissioned to produce a landmark mural on the Myaynigone Flyover in Yangon, a seminal project for the recognition of street art in Myanmar’s public sphere.

💫He participated in the LIA International Art Residency Program in Leipzig, Germany (2022). His works are represented in international collections, including Urban Nation, Urban Contemporary Art Museum, Berlin.

[Diagram i] A concise schema: celestial objects feed both belief and science; each, in turn, inflects Gen-Z digital culture; the ensemble is provisionally managed by civilization and its culture. What does a civilization hold onto when the stars both frighten and explain it? The asteroid—a fragment of rock blasting through emptiness—has always been more than mere mineral mass. It is a node of projection: an object suspended between belief and measurement, between gods and equations, between calculation and dream.

[1320 i] For Thu Myat, who has been studying astronomy—enough to calculate trajectories and orbits himself—the asteroid becomes not only a research subject but a mirror. It is part of his personal journey, a relationship between observation and the self, where private matters blur into astronomical judgements and calculations. He peers into the sky as one might peer into a myth.
