𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗺 𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗲 🎬👇🏽
In this Northern Animation Network-interview, you get a chance to sit down for a chat with Tom Moore - Irish animation director and co-founder of the animation studio Cartoon Saloon.

Here, he traces a rare, almost straight-line route into filmmaking: a childhood spark from Dublin’s Don Bluth studio era, an obsession with drawing as meditation, and the decision to build a studio together with friends when the industry around them disappeared - the kind of studio, that he actually dreamed of working for.

Moore speaks about the realities behind celebrated animation feature films like "Song of the Sea" and "Wolfwalkers": the formative doubt of the blank page, the endurance required to carry a story through years of production, and the emotional intensity, that comes from gathering a lot of passionate artists in one room.

In this interview, you will also learn why he likes co-productions and relatively modest budgets.

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻' 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀
In Denmark, animation is perceived almost exclusively as a format for children. We believe it is time for that to change! On the international animation scene, animated stories aimed at adult audiences are thriving. It is a cinematic art form that naturally deserves support and further development in Denmark as well.

During VAF 2026, and for the fourth consecutive year, Viborg Animation Festival (VAF) and the Danish Film Directors’ Association hosted the pitch competition, 'Pitchin', focusing on animation for adult audiences. During VAF 2026 we could enjoy 8 fantastic and highly diverse projects, with the ultimate jury selection of the winner-project:

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗗𝗢𝗫:𝗫𝗥 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲:
ANIDOX:XR is an annual competition of non-fiction works in virtual reality and new media platforms. AniDox presents a selection of contemporary works focused on outstanding storytelling and craftsmanship. With an ode to love and sexuality, about the exploration of your sexual orientation, the violence q***r women are still confronted with, and about being embraced by the le***an and q***r community, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗗𝗢𝗫:𝗫𝗥 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 is:

"Le***an Simulator" by Iris van der Meule.

𝗝𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
We experienced four incredibly strong pieces, and choosing just one was not easy. In the end, we were especially moved by a work that invited us into a vulnerable, first-hand experience, balancing humor and seriousness while making the most of everything the medium has to offer. We are delighted to award the Anidox:XR Prize to Le***an Simulator!

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗔𝗙 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲:
Audience Choice Award is the newest award at Viborg Animation Festival. The winner is found through a audience surveys after each of the screenings of the nominated titles during the festival. The category includes all the nominated films from the categories: Best Short, Graduation, Experimental and Danish Talent.

In 2026, the audience attended screenings at Nordisk Film Biografer Viborg and after vote casting and calculations, we found that the 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗴 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗶𝘀: "Please" by Anna Mantzaris.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁 🎬
In this reflective portrait, Michelle and Uriel Kranot discuss the creative partnership that has shaped their work across animation, immersive media, research and teaching.

Their collaboration began as students and grew from a shared cultural background, common references and complementary artistic instincts. Michelle speaks from a more experimental and abstract position, while Uriel describes a more cinematic and communicative (or maybe less figurative) sensibility. Together, they embrace contradiction, doubt and interference as productive forces rather than obstacles.

The interview moves through themes of displacement, autobiography, political engagement, poetic expression and the constant search for the right form. The Kranots describe collecting fragments, poems, images and sentences over years, allowing ideas to remain in a drawer until the right moment arrives.

They also speak about public funding, international co-productions, the importance of development support, and their move into VR, XR and immersive work through Nothing Happens. For them, the medium is never predetermined. Each project slowly tells them what it wants to become.

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗩𝗩 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲
The FVV Danish Talent Award is presented by Filmværksted Viborg. Here, we celebrate emerging voices within the Danish animation industry and the award seeks to recognize and support these promising artists as they begin to make their mark with their art.

The winner of 𝗙𝗩𝗩 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 is: "Nothing Will Die" by Rasmus Sølvsten.

𝗝𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
Through an almost horror-like approach, this film vividly portrays just how cruel the cycle of life can be. It is a haunting and at times challenging viewing experience, driven by striking and convincing animation. What may at first seem cosy and peaceful is, in reality, a constant struggle for survival from the very moment life begins. A well-told and captivating film about something as dramatic as the life of a blackbird, from egg to adulthood.

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗔𝗙 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲:
Children’s Choice Award is VAF’s award for shortfilm for kids ages 6-12 years. The films are carefully curated and presents the wonderful and endlessly creative medium of animation. In 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming Arthur, Emil and Sigrid as our VAF Youth Jury.

They picked their favorite, and thereby 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗴 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: "The Epic of Enkidu" by Mike A. Smith.

𝗝𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
All of the 8 short films were fantastic and we were overwhelmed by the talented filmmakers. But there was one film that stood out more than the others. The story was spectacular but also very funny. The style of animation was very nice and reminded us of something that could be on Danish television, for example in ‘Fredags TamTam’. The film we haven chosen talks about friendship and loss from the perspective of a weird fantastical creature.

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗔𝗙 𝗭𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗴𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🌹
The Viborg Animation Festival Zeitgeist Award honors a nominated film that, with artistic strength, reflects and interprets the topical themes, universal values, and the current spirit of its time. The category consists of all the nominated films from the categories: Best Short, Best Experimental, Best Graduation, FVV Danish Talent, and Children's Choice Award.

2026 marks the first year of this new award, and this year, the jury decided to award: "Please" by Anna Mantzaris.

Jury statement:
For the Zeitgeist award we were paying attention to movies with universal and urgent themes that reflect our world today.
We were moved by “Please” by Anna Mantzaris, which covers the problem of lack of connection, polarized society, need for love and understanding in the times of uncertainty.

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗔𝗙 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 ⭐️
Experimental filmmaking is about breaking the rules and limits of what one can do with animation. And the competing film in this year's competition did just that! From the chantings of an Ocean Sorcerer, to a nerving film about an aural disorder, we were treated with the most creative short films from around the world.

We are pleased to present the 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗴 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: "Venezia Diorama" by Nicolas Piret.

𝗝𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
We were mesmerized by meditative quality and the space for contemplation during and after this film. Through attention to detail, groundbreaking concept and true experimental approach this film unveils the topic of destruction and fragility of human creations in the face of the power of nature and time.
