Research trip to Edinburgh Deaf Festival and Edinburgh Fringe 2026
Our director Carol travelled to learn how to create theatre for mixed deaf and hearing audiences, meeting with deaf led organisations working in Scotland and the UK, and seeing shows made by and with deaf artists.
The Singer
Starring Jamie Rea. By Solar Bear Traverse Theatre
A musical with Joe, a deaf artist, who shows how music can be experienced with and without our ears.
For deaf and hearing audiences featuring a deaf and hearing cast performing in BSL and English, with captions and live music. This was an entertaining and moving show with a high production value - bring deaf culture front and centre for a mainstream theatre audience in one of the highest regarded theatre venues in the city.
Boys Don't Dance
By Marc Brew Company Dance Base
A dance performance between disabled and able bodied dancers exploring changing identity. The story was narrated through animation, BSL and captions on the screen above and within the staging, to convey the atmosphere created by the music and background sound. This was a fully accessible show that also integrated audio description and a relaxed performance setup where audience members could feel safe to leave and enter the space as they needed and be aware of potential triggers with light and sound.
A Night in Sign
By Fuse Theatre at Edinburgh Deaf Festival
A cabaret night platforming deaf and hard of hearing talent. The show features established acts and emerging talents. Featuring Chris Fonseca (hip hop dance), Bea Webster (drag), Amy Murray (visual vernacular) and William Grint (Shakespeare). This was a hugely entertaining night hosted by Nadeem Islam. The format was fun and fast and engaging for all. Performances were in BSL or visual vernacular, accessible for hearing audiences too through vocal interpreters and/or captioning.
Pray for Me
By Sarah Adedeji at Edinburgh Deaf Festival
A beautiful one woman work in progress show exploring faith, deafness and identity. Using poetry, movement and live music. Performed in BSL with English interpretation using a recording of the artist's own voice.
