Hamburg, but make it sky-high.
Today I took the family to the Feldstraße bunker in St. Pauli—a WWII concrete giant that’s being turned into a green rooftop world with walkways and views for days. Here’s our little urban adventure 👇
Slide 1 – First look
That hulking block at Heiligengeistfeld? Up close it’s wild: rough concrete, fresh trees on top, street art at the base, and a ramp that winds its way around the bunker. A perfect “wow, what is this?” moment for curious kids (and dads 😅).
Slide 2 – The geometry of stairs
Zig-zag staircases slice across the facade like a steel zipper. I loved the patterns; my son called it “the world’s biggest playground ladder” (…we stayed on the safe side of the fence, promise).
Slide 3 – Details, details
Mesh, bolts, beams—industrial poetry. If you’re into architecture or photography, bring time. Every angle is a new composition.
Slide 4 – The outdoor ramp
We followed the path that climbs along the bunker. Gentle incline, stroller-friendly, and a bit windy—bring a jacket. Watching St. Pauli open up beneath you is half the fun.
Slide 5 – Between rock and garden
Under the terraces, the city hums; above you, ivy and new plantings spill over the edge. It’s the kind of urban contrast Hamburg does so well.
Slide 6 – Inside pop of culture
A surprise: playful murals pointing to cafés, bars, hotel and rock vibes. The bunker is history, but it’s also very now—creative, quirky, welcoming.
Slide 7 – The payoff
Panorama time! Messe halls, the rows of Altbau roofs, and the Heinrich-Hertz-Turm piercing the clouds. Even on a moody day, Hamburg looks beautiful from up here.
If you’re in Hamburg and want a short adventure without leaving the city, this is it. Save this for your next weekend walk, and tell me: would you take the stairs or the ramp? 👇
