Season’s greetings from Fanø Free Folk Festival!

December is here, and as the year is drawing to an end, we’d like to share some memories from this summer’s festival and thank all the people who’ve helped keep the free folk spirit alive in 2025. It’s a troublesome time we live in, but music can still bring healing and a sense of connection in the world, and we’re thankful for all the memories with the incredible musicians, lovely volunteers and beautiful audience who were part of this year’s festival.

We’re also happy to announce that Fanø Free Folk Festival will return in 2026. The festival will take place in Sønderho 23-25. July, so mark the date. Ticket sale will open 11. December 12 PM (Danish time). The perfect Christmas present for a music lover!

We hope to see you in 2026!

A heartfelt thank you for this year's Fanø Free Folk Festival. Should we do another one?

We're filled with gratitude for all the wonderful musicians, volunteers and beautiful audience. And of course deeply grateful for the people of Sønderho who make it possible to create this crazy experiment in a truly magical place.

We're also tired and need to rest. More photos will be posted soon, so here's just a greeting with 4 pictures that capture a bit of the magic of the weekend. Thanks to Henrik Svanekær Kristensen for the photos.

Yesterday was a real banger. But we still got lot of great things to offer on the last day of this year's Fanø Free Folk Festival.

After the brunch, you can join us for a nature walk guided by Cecilie Illemann. Rumor has it that Tandtælleren will also perform a short ritual during the trip.

At 2 PM you get a wonderful chance to learn the traditional dance moves from Sønderho, when members of Sekels Kvintet (who will also perform in the evening) will lead a workshop.

We begin the concerts at 3 PM with a special programme curated by Afvikling/Kaos & Stjernen. With their fondness for tape music and ambient sounds they will draw us into rich sonic worlds with performances by Jakob Folke Ivarsson, Jonas Torstensen and Norwegian artist Jordmenneske.

Also in the afternoon our residency artists Tanja Orning and Helga Myhr will perform in a duo format, presenting music from their mutual album "KLANGKORPUS".

The evening offers a vibrant mix of European folk traditions. We open with the excellent Danish/Swedish quartet Stringflip, known for their powerful mix of Scandinavian and Celtic traditions (they also know how to play a groovy Sønderhoning).

Marion Cousin & Eloïse Decazes hail from France, but in their duo project "Com a lanceta na mão" they explore a repertoire of the songs of Tras-O-Montes, north-east of Portugal. The resulting offering is an amorous, raw, heretical take on this material.

From Portugal and France we move to Scotland and renowned folk musician Malin Lewis, who melds West coast tradition with a newly invented, self-made bagpipe. Hair tingling, philosophical and dance inducing melodies inspired by European folk traditions, human nature, queerness and the universe.

To finish the night, and indeed this year's festival, Sekels Kvintet will fill Sønderho Forsamlingshus with their fresh take on the traditional music of the village, and you will be invited to dance, when they throw a proper Sønderho Ball.

What a blast we had yesterday with a wonderful festival opening.

The Friday programme looks pretty epic. We've just opened for our brunch at the venue, so go there for a coffee and a bite, so you're prepared for a wild ride.

We begin the music today at Sønderho Forsamlingshus with a solo show from extraordinary Norwegian cellist Tanja Orning, who is here on a residency with Helga Myhr. They both play as a duo tomorrow, but today you can hear them both solo with Helga Myhr performing in Sønderho Church later in the afternoon.

Before we go to church, we present the wonderfully quirky world of Danish trio Fantomplads, who recorded their recent album in Sønderho, so it's just like coming home.

The late afternoon is dedicated to exploring the sonic possibilities of the church space with Helga Myhr performing solo with her hardangerfele, our Free Folk hero PO Jørgens presenting a a new project on steel drums and a site specific performance from Heðin Ziska Davidsen + Christian Rønn exploring the pipe organ of the church in relation to sonic layers of electric guitar.

After dinner it's time for some real heavy weights, as we present four strong international acts, and we have to say that we're pretty damn proud. British legend Matt Elliott/The Third Eye Foundation will celebrate the 20 year anniversary of his masterpiece, "Drinking Songs", with a very rare Danish show. Alison Cotton will follow with her beautiful and haunting gothic folk ballads. Then we're excited to bring the always amazing Scottish folk singer Alasdair Roberts back to the festival, this time presenting a new collaboration with experimental Norwegian guitarist Fredrik Rasten. We finish the night with futuristic folk sounds from Ukraine with ZAVOLOKA - a maverick on the Ukrainian electronic music scene, whose music is also a deeply personal cry for freedom for the Ukrainian people and culture.

For many years Fanø Free Folk Festival has had a close contact with the strong Norwegian free folk scene. Thanks to Fondet for dansk-norsk Samarbeid / Fondet for Dansk-Norsk Samarbejde we're able to present a diverse programme continuing this tradition at this year's festival.

This year we're thrilled to present a special residency from Norwegian musicians Helga Myhr and Tanja Orning. They will play a duo show on Saturday, but will also play individual solo concerts on Friday.

On Friday we're also excited to present a musical meeting between Norwegian experimental guitarist Fredrik Rasten and Scottish folk legend Alasdair Roberts. They're working on a duo album to be released on Drag City next year, and we're happy to present their music live at Fanø Free Folk Festival.

On Saturday we present a rare performance by Norwegian sound artist Jordmenneske, who will perform as part of a programme curated by Danish tape music wizards Afvikling/Kaos & Stjernen. Jordmenneske - aka Andreas Barsleth - is a true master of atmosphere, and we're looking forward to his quiet layers of ambient sound at the festival.
