“Sometimes I feel like I’ve learned more about life from my yoga practice, than from music. Through our yoga practice we can discover and learn so many things about ourselves - like how to face challenges. Do you just give up right away? Do you try a little once or twice a week, but without results? Or do you commit to it, show up, and just do the work?
Find the small steps necessary for you to succeed and reach your goal, commit to doing the work, and don’t lose courage along the way, believe in the process. When you are alone in your practice room, you need to find a way to be with yourself - both when you’re strong, and when you’re weak.”

“I decided that I wouldn’t worry about money once I got out of the conservatory. I wouldn’t take jobs just because they’re paid - I wanted to do what I loved, collaborate with the people that inspire me, and create the music I was passionate about!
And money hasn’t been a problem. By being interested in sustainability and choosing my expenses consciously, I don’t really need a high income. I feel like I actively choose my way of life, and I’m very aware of how I use my time and energy, especially now that we’re also taking care of our son. Going to work, whether it’s a concert or a yoga class, is great - I love it!”

Wishing Cecilie Holst Markussen all the best on her study trip to Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Poland 💛

"We will all go through hardships in life, face matters of life and death, and in those moments we’ll need something to lean on, some kind of comfort. In a world where we’re in a spiritual vacuum, the depths of classical music can offer us a peace of mind and calm we need. Classical music is in no way a religion, but it can help bring us joy, create connection, deal with our emotions, convey the things we struggle to put into words, and give us a space to explore what’s truly important in life."

Cecilie Holst Markussen is a classical pianist active as a collaborator and concert pianist in Denmark, France, Germany and Poland. She's currently studying her Advanced Postgraduate Diploma at the National Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark, and is taking a study trip to Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music, Poland, in February 2019.

In addition to her career as a classical pianist, she founded the scandinavian balkan band SuperTrabant, and co-founded Københavns Kultursaloner, a meeting place for music, literature, debate and philosophy.

“I don’t think the audience know that when we’re on stage, we can see every person, every face, in the audience. The concert hall is not as big and anonymous as you might think. A lovely thing that the Danish National Symphony Orchestra does at the end of every concert is that the musicians stand up and wave to the audience, both to those sitting in front of and behind the orchestra. It creates a totally different atmosphere when the audience feel that connection with the musicians, a feeling of recognition and validation - the feeling of “I see you”. I think it’s important that the audience know that they’re not an anonymous part of a larger group, that we include them in the music making, and make them understand that they are an essential part of the music.”

“For me, classical music is just human emotions. It’s another way to express what we feel without the need for words. I believe that there is something for everyone, a piece for every experience, and there’s so much space for you to authentically feel what you’re feeling - there’s no right or wrong, no one to tell you what you’re supposed to do. A lot of other genres and art forms tell you what to feel and when to feel it, but in classical music, where there are no words to guide you, whatever you’re experiencing in that moment is the right thing to experience for you. That’s the freedom classical music gives you.”

27/01/2019

“It’s as if the classical music environment is in a destructive relationship with its audience. We don’t appreciate what we have together, we don’t listen, and refuse to understand each other. I feel like we, the musicians, are to blame, not the audience. We’re an art form built on traditions and conventions dating back hundreds of years, but we refuse to adapt to the modern world. It is possible to make art on the highest level and at the same time keep it casual, relatable and down to earth - there are lots of ensembles already succeeding in doing this. But if we don’t start to change the classical music environment as a whole, and realize that we are the problem, then we’ll lose this relationship.”

🌟New Interview Today 🌟

Our next feature on Tea & Music too is the awesome violinist Astrid Mikaelyan 🎻

We've know each other for quite some time, but it was such a treat to be able to sit down and talk about our common passion, classical music. During our talk we touched on things like what sets classical music apart from other art forms, how to honestly engage and co-create the music with your audience, and the classical music environment's reluctance to adapt.

You know the drill - boils some tea and enjoy this next episode of Tea and Music too - season 2 🍵🎶

to my very first interview with the lovely Emma Oemann! Cudos to her for being open minded about this brand new concept of mine and for bringing her own ideas and energy to the conversation. She is truly one of those genuinely open and warm people that you just want to hang around and chat with forever 💛

If you like beer (and who doesn't 😉), and are close to Odense tonight, Emma will be performing with a beatboxer at Anarkist - Beer & Food Lab at 20:00 tonight - it's bound to be exciting!

"My foundation as a singer is music drama, opera. When I'm on stage I have a part to play - I’m not the main focus, it’s all about the music. At the same time, I also invite the audience into my personal sphere, and have to authentically feel the emotions within myself first, in order to express and convey it convincingly to the audience.

Through the music, we get to experience all aspects of being human - both physical, emotional, and spiritual - and if the audience leaves the concert with a different feeling or focus than they had before, I think it worked."

Emma Oemann is a mezzosoprano currently based in Odense, Denmark. She has worked in the Opera Chorus of the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, and as a soloist in several small opera companies and concepts, like Guidopera, Opera Hedeland and Øl & Opera.

Apart from her career as a singer, she also creates and manages music projects - like the popular children's opera De Tre Tanter, based on the story books by Elsa Beskow, which she co-created, arranged and composed together with Malena Rønnow, Tessa Kiilsholm, and Britt Krogh Grønnebæk.

Emma holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree from the Danish National Academy in Odense (Syddansk Musikkonservatorium - SDMK), a secondary Master's Degree from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and is currently taking her Advanced Postgraduate Diploma at the Danish National Academy in Odense.

“Collaborations. That's what really motivates me to do what I do. To feel the passion and drive in the group to create and explore music together. I don't care if what we're making is fine art or not, but to be on stage with that special feeling of “Yes! This, what we're doing right now, is so cool!”. That makes it all worthwhile for me.”
