Deep in the woods in Devon, there are 5 small teardrop-shaped wooden cabins you can spend the night in.
uk , who runs the site, built them using the geometry we developed for the transparent Droplet, of which we’ve made quite a few in collaboration with

But John has CNC milled them from 6mm marine plywood, instead of polycarbonate.

The shell itself, which makes up the ceiling and walls, is made from just 40 sheets of 6mm plywood. It may sound like a lot, but it’s surprisingly little material to create a 25m2 space that can withstand both snow and wind loads.
They are mounted on screw foundations so they don’t damage the roots in the ground and can easily be removed again.

It’s great to see the geometry used in this way and with an interior you want to snuggle up in.

Det er bare et hus. Som de har eksisteret i Danmark i tusinder af år, men jeg er virkelig stolt af, hvad vi har opnået i forhold til at lave noget, der stræber efter bare at være det, og at bare være det så godt som muligt.

Håndværket, de synlige konstruktioner, CNC- og Robot-præfabrikation og måske vigtigst en holdning til biogene materialer, ved helt at undgå betonfundering, glasfiber-branddug, dampspærrer, gips og mineraluld.
Vitterligt kun træ, strå og stål indtil videre.

Lige nu bliver stråtaget lagt, og selve boligen til forpagterparret Nanna og Christopher kan bygges i tørvejr under det store tag.
Der dufter af træ og strå på pladsen hvor det store stuehus genopføres.
Det minder om noget traditionelt og forankret, selvom skellettet til boligen er skåret af robotter af genbrugstræ fra vindmølleindustrien og spærene er præfabrikeret af LVL efter CNC skabeloner og forankret med laserskårede stålfødder på skruefundamenter.

Det har været en kamp at nå hertil, og vi er ikke i mål endnu.
Vi har måtte udfordre reglementer, brandklasser og afvigelser fra præ-accepterede løsninger, selvom det virker så traditionelt og umiddelbart.
Vi påtænker at lave en fortælling om rejsen igennem krav og regler, når man gerne vil bygge så bæredygtigt og biogent som muligt og hvor besværligt det bliver gjort for en, når man ikke bare gør som man plejer.

This is how it looked at .andelsgaarde yesterday. And a fine wreath was placed on top by according to danish tradition.

It’s so satisfying to finally see the building rise and reveal whether the considerations in relation to views and juxtaposition work as intended.

Lerbjerggård was originally one of the larger farms in Melby, with a beautiful and large main house, right next to the main street and the entrance to the town.
It was important to us that the new main building had potential for the future development of the farm and Andelsgaarde, so it has been given a size that matches the old main house and as the farm’s third wing restores the beautiful courtyard.
Although the dwelling has been reduced under the roof and has provided space for activities for the cooporative farm.

The studio is officially up and running again now that my maternity leave is over. And what a start to working life. In Melby, at .andelsgaarde , where we have designed a new main house, there is a topping-out ceremony tomorrow. It’s a new house for .dk and, not least, for and .fischlein , who will finally be able to move properly into the farm soon. It’s been a long time coming, partly due to all kinds of external factors, but also because we’ve chosen to take on every struggle and challenge when rules and textbooks have prevented us from building as sustainably as possible. And we intend to follow up and report on that later.  The rafters system are a further development of the rafters we designed and used for the greenhouse on the same farm.  The rafters were produced at .andelsgaarde on Funen by and , using CNC milled templates from .  Stålindustri made the customised steel feet that connect the rafters to the large screws from . Jensen Ingeniører has been responsible for statics, fire and indoor climate, and now has the contract to erect the rafters and build the house itself.  Looking forward to follow the build and tell about it.

We are very honored!

have decided to support the studios investigative work with transformation and new vernacular typologies for .dk
It means a lot and allows us to get further with our ambitions on making the best possible projects for the farms that are already in development and hopefully create examples for future use.

Dew on the newly finished 50m2 Droplet.

The new and larger Droplet is up at the psychiatric hospital in Odense.
I’m very pleased with the result, the larger interior and the elliptical floor plan that makes it change appearance as you move around it.

I’m hoping it will bring a lot of plants and joy into the life of the patients and the caretakers at the hospital.

Great work who produced and erected it.

Besides the greenhouse, we build the small thatched house in the background last year from reclaimed timber from the former pigs stable, that was taken down where the greenhouse is now located.

Design planning of the wooden homes for .dk

It’s more difficult to solve all parts of a build with biogenic materials, sure.
But it’s so satisfying to se the planning of the houses come together using screw foundations, wooden load bearing structures, wooden facades, clay and wooden claddings, paperwool insulation and thatched roofs.
Getting very close to a fully bio based and degradable house.

The necessary steps to be able turn the sunny and blue sky renders into reality.

Two of our most important projects to date are nearing start of construction.
And we are very excited to see the two homes at .andelsgaarde and .andreas.andelsgaarde take shape in the coming months.
They are the first homes to come from our studio and for us that’s a very big deal.
