On the reading list for ‘s current solo at Tranen, we find Edgar Allan Poe’s classic short story “A Descent into the Malström” from 1841🧐 As a fishing boat is sucked into a whirlpool, the mood of one of the crew members shifts from terror to excitement

Tomorrow 14:15-15:00 T**e Lykkeberg, director of Tranen, will host a talk at the People’s meeting in Gentofte. The topic is Cultural Preparedness in times of crisis. Artist revisits Tranen and Gentofte Main Library with her inflatable sculptures, Last Survivors, which she made for .festival earlier this year.
She’s accompanied by writer and professor

About the talk:

“We can build d***s, draw up evacuation plans and prepare for the worst. But can we also prepare ourselves spiritually and culturally for scenarios where the threat picture becomes complex and our world and reality crumble?
T**e Lykkeberg, head of Tranen, invites you to a conversation about the ongoing debate on so-called “cultural preparedness”. Among the guests is Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen, professor of political science and expert in geopolitics. In his book Krisesamfundet (The Crisis Society), written in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, he discusses societies such as ours, where crisis is no longer the exception but the rule. At the turn of the year, he suggested on the radio programme Genstart that science fiction is sometimes a better guide to the world of today and tomorrow than university textbooks.
He is joined on the panel by two artists, both of whom outline scenarios for the near and distant future. Ida-Marie Rendtorff is an author, literary scholar, former primary school teacher and known for her fantastic and dystopian stories for children and young people. One of her major works is the trilogy Kloden under vand (The Planet Under Water), published in 2012-14, which is becoming increasingly relevant. Stine Deja is a visual artist who created the exhibition Cold Sleep about biotechnological immortality in 2021 at Tranen. She is currently exhibiting at Gentofte Folkemøde with her gigantic work Last Survivors, which is based on Chinese researchers’ work to create resilient hybrid creatures by crossing human and tardigrade DNA.”

At Tranen, the bathroom is not a small, private cubicle. Instead, Starck has created a large, open space resembling the bathing facilities and changing rooms of a swimming pool. There are shower cubicles, lockers for clothes, bathrobes, slippers, and a large drain—all distorted, twisted, and displaced. The private becomes public. The closed space is opened up. Small things take on monstrous forms. What each individual does for themselves in secret is presented as something we all do and therefore share. But with Starck, the whole scene is both more gruesome and comical than that. The bodies that were supposed to be cared for, optimized, and finally displayed in the real world in the bathroom are lying around on the floor. They are so worn out that they can no longer pick themselves up again. The exhausted bodies are all spiraling their way out of the drain in the middle of the floor.

🗣️VÅDRUM by is now open!

With her first institutional solo exhibition, the total installation VÅDRUM, Nanna Starck transforms Tranen into a bathroom. For Starck, it is the scene of a number of our civilising rituals. It is here that we cut our nails, shave, care for our skin and hair and, in short, perform our toilet. The bathroom is the place where we retreat from the world in order to re-enter it as a better version of ourselves.

A bathroom is, as the title VÄDRUM suggests, a wet room. It is usually a hermetically sealed space where all liquids that may enter and exit are strictly regulated and controlled. As such, a bathroom is reminiscent of our body culture. But the artist’s sculpted bathroom and bodies are not closed, but perforated in completely impossible ways.
Wardrobes have been transformed into ge***al openings with drain grates. The figures have had their heads cut off with all their openings, but in return equipped with such large voids in their solar plexus that you can see right through them.
Starck’s bodies are in constant exchange with their surroundings. They are a multitude of known and unknown entrances and exits through which basic needs and desires are vitally and joyfully satisfied.
The individual, who usually has to present themselves to the outside world, is here beyond external and internal pressures. There are no more expectations to be reconciled. Starck’s bodies are merging with their surroundings as they descend into the maelstrom, both lost and exalted.

Go see it in the flesh🫵
NB: Tranen is closed Sundays during summer

Even animals that humans have not been able to domesticate or tame have found their place in our homes. The so-called “teddy bear” that lets bears into our homes through the back door came on the market in 1903 after US President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt couldn’t bring himself to shoot a captured bear on a hunt. The dangerous bear has become a pacifier. Lahoda’s teddy bear, however, is made of rock wool.

Anthropologist Cecilie Rubow is on the reading list for the solo show WITHIN THE WALL by .
As Rubow suggests, most of us have become so-called ‘indoor people’, who stay inside 90% of the time:
“In human history, it’s new that we spend so much time indoors [...] In our most modern condition, nature is a kind of leisure activity. Nature becomes a place where we don’t belong.”
