We have searched several times for this species in the wild, but have never found any. They are said to originate from the Nile, close to Lake Victoria. Today they also most likely are extinct from the EU hobby - but some are still to be found in the US.

I have written an article about how we in 2024 discovered H. sp. "gold", which recently was published in the Scandinavian cichlid magazine, "Ciklidbladet". This is a cool species, that I hope you aquarists will help keep pure and safe for many years to come. 😊

Paralabidochromis sauvagei( formerly H. rockkribensis) is one of the Victoria classics. Note the difference in dominant and nondominant males, how the dominant ones almost loose their horizontal black stripes. Females are the pretty yellow ones.
This species we have found all over the lake from north to south. This variant here is from Zue.

Many mistake A. burtoni to be a Lake Victoria cichlid, but it however has its origin from the Lake Tanganyika basin, where it can be found at many locations. The locations can vary in color, and males be anything from yellow to blue.

This is a crappy photo, but however the only one I have of Rubricatochromis. sp. "Guinea 1". I took the picture back when Hemichromis was used as genus, but it has since changed. Hopefully the poor quality of the photo, is justified by the rarity of the fish.

In 2017 we collected H. squamipinnis, which is a rather big piscivore from Lake Edward. They are still around in very limited numbers in the hobby, but has never, and will never become popular due to their size and lack of color.

Natural sunlight shining on the Pundamilia redhead. These are all beta-males. The alfa-male is even more red, and not shown here. They are doing extremely well - such a lovely species!

I have completed the breeding project of my Haplochromis “macula”, now having fry from all 6 males. We collected this species in 2024 and 2025, the video shows one of the 2024 males.
