Kunstrum Fyn's third art and science project, Under the Surface / Under Overfladen, invites collaboration with Funen-based artist Begitte Lynge Andersen. The artist works with textile, prints, sculpture, and installations made from recycled materials.

Opening Saturday, 22 August 2026.

Freshwater and the sea are fundamental to nature and society, but they face growing challenges from pollution and climate change. Denmark, surrounded by sea, is threatened by rising sea levels, especially for coastal communities in low-lying areas. At the same time, groundwater pollution threatens drinking water and agriculture. Nutrients from agriculture leach into the soil and contaminate groundwater. Chemicals and microplastics from industry and waste are found in both sea and groundwater, raising concerns for ecosystem health and human well-being.

Bringing together artists, researchers, and the public, Kunstrum Fyn's art and science project Under the Surface invites reflection, conversation, and action. Join us in exploring how art and science can illuminate these pressing environmental challenges and inspire action.

The seminar - In Conversation with Plants and Landscapes – taking place this coming Sunday between11 am 1.30 pm, will explore the intricate relationships between ancient landscapes and the vibrant world of plants through the research of biologist Morten Fischer Mortensen and mycologist Martin Schier Christainsen.

Morten Fischer Mortensen is a biologist at The National Museum of Denmark, working at the intersection of archaeology and natural science, with a particular focus on the natural environments in which humans have lived throughout history.

Martin Schier Christiansen is a Danish biologist educated at the University of Copenhagen with a specialization in ecology. He works as an independent biologist, offering educational mediation about forests, mushrooms and biodiversity.

The Swedish artist Christine Ödlund’s work spans art, metaphysics, and science, with a particular focus on plant communication.

At BOTANIK Ödlund will be presenting the audio-visual work Stress Call of the Stinging Nettle, created from a score for a musical composition based on observations over time of the chemical activity of a population of stinging nettles when one of them is “attacked” by a larva.

Referencing educational botanical drawings and amateur watercolour studies of nature as well as the electro-acoustic notation of Györgi Ligeti and John Cage, Stress Call… brings together scientific and artistic speculation into the communication and sensory reactions of plants.

Margrethe Pettersen is a Norwegian-Sami artist and florist who seeks to challenge the modern perception that separates culture from nature. In her process-oriented work Pettersen uses a specific place, a plant or a river as starting point for sensing, mapping, collecting knowledge, stories and sounds.

Learning new skills, talking to people from different professions (scientist, botanist, biologist) can also be part of her process.

For BOTANIK, Pettersen is developing a performative lecture and ritual focusing on the tinder fungus (douvli).

Nils Bech will open BOTANIK – Under the Dark Sky with a site-specific performance! Kunstrum Fyn is very happy to collaborate with the brilliant Norwegian singer and performance artist.

Bech explores the tensions between art, contemporary music and pop music by working with voice, music, movement, and text. In his captivating live performances he creates intimate, emotional spaces embracing the audience with his beautiful voice and presence.
