DO YOU KNOW WHY AUGUST 11 IS A SPECIAL DAY IN HIP HOP? 🤔
Today we celebrate 53 years of Hip Hop 💪
Two kids. Two different journeys. One culture that would become a part of who we are.
Joel found Breaking in 1989. Karen in 1998.
We both fell in love with Hip Hop and ever since, it has been in our DNA.
It’s how we express ourselves.
It’s what we live and breathe every day.
We love the culture, we respect the culture and we continue to learn from it. And with everything it has given us, we always strive to give back, pass it on, honor the ones before us and create opportunities for the next generation.
On August 11, 1973, Cindy Campbell organized a Back to School Jam at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, with her brother DJ Kool Herc on the turntables. That party has become widely recognized as a symbolic birthplace of Hip Hop - not because the culture suddenly appeared out of nowhere that day, but because it represents a defining moment in the development of what would become Hip Hop culture.
More than five decades later, the culture has travelled around the world, changed countless lives - including ours - and continues to evolve.
Happy 53rd Anniversary, Hip Hop 🩷
Thank you for the music, the dance, the words, the art, the knowledge, the community, the opportunities and the lifelong journey.
We’re still learning. Still dancing. Still giving back.
