Sawing with a Japanese handsaw has been a great tool experience. When a saw is sharp, it is so satisfying to work with the wood.

MYCOFORM

As part of my Master of Architecture material explorations at UBC, I began investigating how naturally occurring materials might offer new possibilities for architectural applications.

Driven by a curiosity for biogenic materials and hands-on making, I experimented with traditional papermaking techniques using 100% mushroom pulp sourced from wild BC conk mushrooms.

The process began in the forest, harvesting mushrooms by hand, before moving into the studio where the material was prepared by macerating the mushrooms into a pulp slurry. Using traditional papermaking screens, the pulp was formed into sheets and dried into an earthy, textured paper with a colour reminiscent of recycled kraft paper.

The resulting material was surprisingly flexible, capable of being folded, bent, and torn much like conventional paper, while still retaining a unique tactile quality and natural character entirely its own.

MYCOFORM emerged from this exploration as both a material study and a lamp design: an attempt to translate a raw, organic material into an architectural object.

What made the process especially rewarding was the full cycle of making from foraging in the forests of British Columbia to shaping and assembling the final piece in the studio.

This project was developed as part of my material explorations at UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

This scale model explores my design for a wheelchair rugby and community centre which attempts to emerge from its surrounding landscape. The building features a traversable green roof extending from the highest point of the connecting slope to create an accessible public terrain rather than an inaccessible natural object.

The model was 3D printed in many individual components and carefully assembled by hand. The terrain texture was created using 100% mushroom pulp paper developed through earlier material experiments.

Just delivered my semester final presentation and I am really glad to have made it this far! 1/3 of the way through my masters education in Architecture at UBC. It has been challenging, rewarding and fun. Now, so looking forward to a break, getting out and enjoying the coming summer in BC ☀️ 🌊 🏔️

Glad to have finished this project up, which set out to design a home that interweaves private and shared living spaces.

My take took an unusual twist in the form, integrating a spiral structure that opens up to a broad skylight and plays with interior and exterior spaces.

I learned a lot, was constantly challenged, and pushed against the pressures of time and indecision. Honestly, when all was said and done, I wasn’t really in love with the results — but I realized that the process was more valuable than the outcome. The learning took many forms, both personally and in terms of skill.

One more for the books ✅

Attention to small details in 1:10 scale. This joinery technique, inspired by Japanese design, allows for bolt or screw connections, making installation quick and easy. The double beam connection enhances strength and rigidity.

Just wrapped up our submission for this fun project! My partner and I built a 1:10 scale model in real wood — a sectional concept featuring a light-filled promenade that channels sunlight, rainwater, and fresh air into the heart of the structure. 🌿

The idea explores a low-impact design that transforms an otherwise inaccessible site into a walkable experience celebrating local ferns and foliage. We’re proud of how it turned out (even if we learned a few lessons along the way — like adding more lateral bracing and refining the model’s robustness).

On to the next! ✨project.
