While most death metal bands in 1992 focused on speed, brutality, and chaos, Finland’s Demigod took a different path. Slumber of Sullen Eyes is built on crushing riffs, dark atmosphere, and haunting melodies, creating a sound that still feels unique more than 30 years later.

Alongside Demilich, Demigod helped define the unmistakable Finnish death metal sound. For me, Finland stands proudly among the “Big 4” OSDM nations: Finland, Sweden, the UK, and the US.

This album remains an essential piece of my OSDM collection.

UNDERRATED OSDM from the early 90s – Part 16.

Deceased (1992), the debut full-length from American death-doom metal act ACCIDENTAL SU***DE, remains a true cult classic within the underground death metal scene. This obscure gem perfectly blends raw old-school death metal brutality with haunting doom metal atmospheres, creating a dark, suffocating, and unforgettable listening experience.

The band shifts effortlessly between slow, crushing doom passages and aggressive mid-to-fast death metal sections. Thick, fuzzy guitar tones collide with tortured vocal dynamics ranging from eerie shrieks to deep guttural growls. Fans of Autopsy, early Paradise Lost, and classic underground death-doom will immediately recognize the oppressive atmosphere, technical riffing, and fearless experimentation with tempo and melody.

UNDERRATED OSDM from the early 90s – Part 15

Why isn’t FLESHCRAWL talked about more as one of the true pioneers of German death metal? After dropping a quick EP in 1991, the band came crashing in with their full-length debut, Descend Into the Absurd (1992) — and this album is an absolute monster.

Clocking in at nearly an hour, Fleshcrawl delivers crushing riff after crushing riff, whether it’s the bleak, desolate opener “Between Shadows They Crawl” or the massive seven-minute death-doom assaults that follow. Every track hits hard, packed with slow, plodding heaviness, filthy atmosphere, and pure old-school brutality.

This isn’t just another OSDM record — this might be one of the greatest German death metal albums ever released.

Fleshcrawl created a sound that was rotten, crushing, and timeless — and this album deserves far more respect in the history of underground death metal.

DELIRIUM – Zzooouhh (1990)

The origins of death/doom metal are dark, obscure, and impossible to define exactly. Somewhere between the crushing heaviness of BLACK SABBATH, the primitive darkness of HELLHAMMER and CELTIC FROST, and the raw brutality of early DEATH, AUTOPSY, and OBITUARY, bands began slowing things down and creating a colder, heavier, and more atmospheric form of old school death metal.

DELIRIUM’s Zzooouhh stands as one of the hidden gems from that transition era. Released in 1990, this underrated Dutch cult album perfectly blends filthy OSDM riffs with the bleak and haunting atmosphere that later shaped classic death/doom metal. Slow, murky, oppressive, and unforgettable.

A seriously strong record that creates a special atmosphere in my home every time it spins. I was lucky enough to find this masterpiece in a second-hand crate for only 5€ many years ago — one of those magical vinyl collector moments.

Dutch death metal deserves far more attention in the history of underground extreme metal. Who remembers this underrated classic?

UNDERRATED OSDM from the early ’90s – Part 13

Hailing from the dark depths of Hamburg, Germany, TORCHURE are, in my opinion, one of the most underrated and overlooked acts in death metal history, creating some truly atmospheric and blood-chilling death metal.

Tragically, the same year they released the masterpiece Beyond the Veil, brothers Andreas and Thorsten Reissdorf lost their lives in a car accident. Naturally, this had a major impact on the band, which became evident on the following year’s release, The Essence. While it is by no means a bad album, it never reaches the same emotional depth as its predecessor.

Beyond the Veil(1992) is a haunting and deeply melancholic journey through insanity and meaninglessness, filled with brilliantly composed songs, addictive thrash-inspired riffs, expressive and soulful vocals, solid production, and mournful undertones throughout. The result is one of the finest pieces of German extreme metal ever created.

This album deserves far more attention from OSDM listeners out there.

UNDERRATED OSDM from the early 90s – Part 12

Released in 1992, Fornever Laid to Rest by SEANCE remains one of the most savage and underrated gems of the early Swedish death metal scene. While many Swedish bands leaned into chainsaw tones and dark melodies, Seance went straight for the throat with a brutal, technical attack inspired more by the Florida death metal scene.

Think Deicide, Malevolent Creation, and Monstrosity rather than Entombed.

With razor-sharp production from Berno Studio, relentless blast-driven intensity, chaotic technical riffing and cavernous growls, this album still sounds absolutely vicious today. A true cult classic for fans of old school death metal, technical death metal, and extreme underground metal history.

Almost 35 years since I first heard this record
 and it still holds a permanent place among the strongest albums in my collection.

UNDERRATED OSDM from the early 90s – Part 11

PARALYSIS (US) – Patrons of the Dark (1992) is one of those records that splits the room. Mid-tempo, murky, and unapologetically raw, it leans hard into a thick, upfront bass mix and chaotic, sometimes repetitive thrashy riffing. For some, it’s sloppy and forgettable—but for others, it’s a seriously overlooked gem dripping with atmosphere and underground spirit.

This one keeps crawling back out of my collection and onto the turntable. Maybe it’s the haunting logo and grimy artwork
 or just that undeniable old-school vibe that refuses to stay buried.

If you’re into early 90s underground death metal with grit, character, and audible low-end filth, Patrons of the Dark deserves your attention. Easily ranks in the upper tier of my OSDM stash.

UNDERRATED OSDM from the early 90s – Part 10

CARBONIZED – For the Security (1991) is not your typical Swedish death metal record. This is where raw Sunlight Studio brutality collides with something far more unpredictable—progressive twists, psychedelic textures, and a fearless experimental edge.

The result? A chaotic yet highly technical album that feels like an outsider in the scene—in the best possible way. It refuses to follow the rules, blending grindcore intensity with unconventional song structures that still sound fresh decades later.

With a lineup featuring Lars Rosenberg (later of Entombed) and Christofer Johnsson (Therion), this release has rightfully earned its place as a cult classic—an “outcast” masterpiece that stands apart from the classic Swedish death metal formula.

A personal favourite from my Swedish OSDM collection.
