Leftfield Theatre

Leftfield Theatre Denmark's most controversial theatre company that produces radical, innovative and challenging work in the live performing arts.

Leftfield Theatre is the new and progressive theatre company of Copenhagen, Denmark; bringing the city’s English-language theatre scene kicking and screaming into the 21st century by presenting radical, dynamic and challenging text-based work in the live performing arts. In other words, Leftfield Theatre is the long-awaited shot of adrenaline to the heart of Copenhagen audiences and artists, as we

produce the kinds of shows that are controversial, s*xy, hilarious, provocative, brash. The company is an ensemble of international and Danish actors, technicians, artists, misfits and theatre-lovers, and our focus is on new ways of storytelling, innovative staging, unique approaches to the discipline, and fearless perspectives on urgent ideas and philosophies. What you’ll get with a Leftfield production is a very bumpy ride, but all the compelling themes will be there: beauty, atrocity, the seven deadly sins. We stage dramas, farces and experimental theatre of both original and established works, and expect twisted tales and unique takes on modern life, crap jobs, s*x, drugs, love, violence and murky lowlife; anything that challenges the mind and enlightens the heart. There are f-words, c-words and sh-words galore; mind-bendingly non-linear plots can turn in unexpected directions; and we utilise the latest technologies, avant-garde music and unrivalled production design to probe the depths of the human (and many times non-human) experience. There is also a great deal of humour - deliciously dark, laugh-out-loud stuff. And do bear in mind that many of our projects contain nudity, graphic scenes of a s*xual and violent nature, unmentionable subjects and religious images that many may find offensive. In every scene in a Leftfield production we devise a way to make you ask, ”What’s going to happen next?” The question emerges less from suspense-theatre trickery than from an intermingling of dread, hope and fate - from our vision of the world as a brightly coloured existential playground. Put this together with some absolutely riveting performances from some of the most extraordinary actors on the theatre scene today, and you don’t just get engrossed in what’s happening on stage, you get intoxicated by it - high on the rediscovery of how magical and boundary-pushing theatre can be. We at Leftfield also believe in giving young and unproven talent a chance to prove its worth by aiming to strike the right balance between established actors and new exciting talent. Believe the hype. Leftfield Theatre aim to set the guideposts of what theatre can be, and we are unique among Danish theatre companies. We are sounding a battle cry for a powerful new moment in theatre, and our model is experimental but accessible, strange and dreamlike, but familiar and immediate. This is intense, challenging and complex experiential theatre that celebrates our diversity, reflects on the problems and possibilities of our times, and presents productions that inspire, disturb and entertain. Strapping yourself in for a production by an ensemble for whom 'too far' is never quite far enough can be a risk, but the risk is worth it: because after the ride is over, you feel something. And it will feel like something you've never experienced before.

O villain, villain, smiling, damnèd villain! My tables! Meet it is I set it down. That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain. At least I’m sure it may be so in Denmark.

In another news, the controversy never ends at Leftfield Theatre, but HBO Nordic was stopped in its tracks as 'Game of Thrones' returned to Denmark. Culture Round-Up: Continuing a long tradition of Danish Bond villains

During last night's premiere of The Director the audience were very confused, we had walk outs, lots of lols, audience members swore and yelled at actors, people talked during parts of the performance, people chatted with strangers, people tried to sabotage the show, people drank and shared sweets, people mucked about, people left thinking the show had ended when it hadn't, one old boy stunned everyone by seemingly admitting to child abuse and proclaiming it the norm, and one woman shouted at an actor, literally ran out, slammed the exit door and could be heard screaming from the lounge. There's more including myself and the actors being told to stay in the dressing room after the show.

Cool.
