South Africa winning the Rugby World Cup this year with a multiracial team, and their first black captain, was a poignant reminder of how the country has changed in the last 25 years. Rugby has a complicated relationship with apartheid, and for many years was seen as a symbol of white supremacy in country. The international sporting boycott was a contributing factor in bringing an end to apartheid, and rugby was used as a tool to bridge the gap between South Africa's racial groups.

Apartheid ( /əˈpɑːrteɪd/, segregation; lit. "separateness") was a system of institutionalised racial segregation that existed in South Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s. International diplomacy is a complicated business, especially when different symbols and customs have different meanings in different counties. When British Prime minister David Cameron met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he was wearing a poppy that is commonly worn in the UK to commemorate those who have fallen in battle. Unfortunately the Chinese were deeply offended because they see the poppy as a symbol of British oppression that was epitomised by the 19th century O***m Wars. We have set the menu for the 'How does diplomacy work?' event 😊

Starter: Terrine of cod and scallop, served with fermented celeriac, seafood sauce and herbs.

Main Course: Veal fillet with mushroom ragout and veal brisket. Served with baked onions and potatoes, and a rich herb sauce.

Dessert: Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.

A vegetarian or vegan option will also be available upon request.
