I was never organized enough as a single parent to keep a journal of the things that Mac and Fiona said or did when they were young. Instead, I would find a piece of paper and write it down before I forgot, and then put it in this box. Every once in a while this box reappears and I read the bits of papers. I’m so glad I had the presence of mind in those days to do this. Such sweet, funny and touching words.

Any Tristate people know about this trail? Came upon it yesterday and was surprised to see the name. David English was a good friend of mine in high school and am thinking it must be named after him. David and I were mildly “twitter-pated” with each other for a short time. Mostly we just walked around, our fav spot being Carpenter State Park. He was long and lanky, usually disheveled, and completely comfortable hanging out in the woods and wide open fields. He had a crooked half smile that I thought was particularly charming. He was irreverent, well read and wickedly funny. I remember being nervous when he picked me up in his retrofitted ambulance to take me on a “real” date. We went to dinner at a crab place called Leonardo’s. I’d never eaten crabs and was horrified to witness them being smashed violently by mallets. He tried to get me to join in, but I couldn’t. David’s young life was tragically cut short not long after in a freak accident at White Clay Creek. I’m going to make this my new trail for awhile and spend time thinking about David, and imagining the man he might have become.
