Before becoming an acoustic material, eelgrass is gently collected after it naturally washes ashore along the Danish coastline and then spread across nearby fields to dry.

Sun and wind gradually remove the moisture while helping preserve the fibres, natural colour variations and tactile character of the plant. Once dry, the eelgrass is ready to be processed into Søuld Acoustic Panels.

A simple, low-intervention process that keeps the material closely connected to its coastal origin.

Søuld Wooden Frames combine solid oak with soft, tactile Acoustic Mats made from eelgrass. The raised oak profiles create a subtle play of light and shadow, bringing depth and rhythm to the natural surface while providing Acoustic Class A sound absorption.

Designed for disassembly and available in Oiled Oak or Smoked Oiled Oak, the frames offer a simple way to introduce natural materials and acoustic comfort into offices, hospitality spaces and homes. Designed and produced in Denmark.

Beneath the surface, eelgrass forms extensive underwater meadows that play an important role in healthy coastal ecosystems. During growth, the sea plant binds carbon and provides habitat and shelter for a wide range of marine species, contributing to the ecological balance of shallow coastal waters.

At Søuld, our relationship with this ecosystem begins with responsible sourcing. We only collect eelgrass after it has naturally detached and washed ashore along the Danish coastline, leaving living eelgrass meadows undisturbed.

By giving the washed ashore material a new purpose in durable acoustic products, we extend the storage of the carbon captured during its growth. Independent biodiversity analysis confirms that our collection practices do not negatively affect the ecological integrity of the examined coastal areas, including the seabed, eelgrass distribution, birdlife and other species.

Designed by@signehytte for COMPOSED MATTER, STOA explores the relationship between structure, rhythm and materiality.

Inspired by the classical Greek colonnade, the collection combines integrated Søuld eelgrass panels with brushed aluminium surfaces. The contrast between soft, tactile eelgrass and refined metal creates a balanced expression where warmth and precision coexist.

By carving grooves into the eelgrass panels, the material becomes flexible enough to bend into soft, rounded forms. This technique makes it possible to create the curved geometry beneath the tabletops, transforming a flat acoustic panel into a sculptural element while highlighting the versatility of the material.

The collection includes a coffee table, square coffee table, console table and pedestal table — each conceived as a study in repetition, proportion and quiet presence.

Søuld has a negative CO2 footprint in the production phase (A1-A3) of up to -3,6 kg CO2eq/m2

Eelgrass binds large amounts of carbon during its growth and if left to decompose, it would release CO2 back into the atmosphere. By safely storing this carbon in durable building materials, Søuld’s products act as carbon sinks, resulting in a highly positive climate impact.

Søuld’s products are made in Denmark using manufacturing practices that generate almost zero waste and have low energy consumption. Both Søuld’s products and processes are designed to be fully circular, aiming for the lowest possible environmental impact.

No two Søuld panels are exactly alike.

Made from naturally washed ashore eelgrass, our acoustic panels display subtle variations in colour, texture and fibre distribution. From muted greens to warm browns, every panel reflects the journey of the eelgrass—shaped by the sea, the seasons and the natural lifecycle of the plant.

These variations are not imperfections, but an inherent quality of the material itself. Rather than concealing them, we preserve them, allowing every panel to express its own unique character and coastal origin.

It is this natural variation that gives eelgrass its depth, tactility and enduring character.

The story of Søuld begins on the Danish island of Læsø, where people developed a unique way of building with eelgrass more than 400 years ago. In a landscape with few natural resources, naturally washed ashore eelgrass became an abundant building material for the island’s distinctive seaweed houses.

Women collected the eelgrass from the shoreline, dried it and wove it into thick thatched roofs around simple timber frames. Over time, the roofs compacted into a dense, durable layer that offered natural insulation, weather resistance and remarkable longevity, with some surviving for more than 300 years.

By the beginning of the 20th century, around 250 eelgrass-thatched houses shaped the landscape of Læsø. As modern construction methods emerged, the tradition gradually disappeared until a renewed interest in the material led to the restoration of the remaining seaweed houses and the rediscovery of traditional knowledge.

Today, Søuld builds on this heritage by combining centuries of material knowledge with contemporary research and technology. The result is high-performance acoustic materials that bring the remarkable qualities of eelgrass into today’s architecture—preserving an important part of Danish building culture while giving the material a new purpose.

In the vibrant setting of Goldfinch, acoustics play an essential role in shaping the dining experience.

Integrated into the restaurant’s bar area, Søuld Acoustic Panels help absorb sound in one of the busiest parts of the space, creating a more balanced acoustic environment where conversations can unfold comfortably alongside the energy of the restaurant.

Precisely carved grooves allow the eelgrass panels to bend gently around the corner of the bar, creating a continuous architectural expression that highlights the material’s natural tactility and versatility. Soft curves, warm textures and high acoustic performance come together to support conversation, comfort and a welcoming atmosphere throughout the space.

Gentle processed eelgrass in the process of becoming Søuld products.

After naturally drifting ashore, the eelgrass arrives at Søuld’s production facility in round bales, where it is analysed, sorted and classified according to colour and quality. The long eelgrass leaves are then rinsed to remove stones and natural impurities before being shredded into shorter, standardised fibres that ensure consistent aesthetic and mechanical properties.

Each fibre carries the marks of its origin. Variations in colour, texture and form reflect the natural character of the material and the coastal landscapes from which it comes.

Through careful processing, a material shaped by wind, waves and time is transformed into contemporary acoustic solutions — preserving the tactile qualities, beauty and inherent performance of eelgrass while preparing it for a new life in architecture and design.
