Reflection on Eid ul-Adha as an International Student in Denmark.
Today, on the occasion of Eid ul-Adha—one of the most significant festivals in the Muslim community—I found myself commuting to my second job of the day. This celebration traditionally represents a time of togetherness, where families and friends gather in joy, prayer, and gratitude. In previous years, I would have spent this day surrounded by loved ones, immersed in a shared sense of cultural and spiritual unity.
However, as an international student living in Denmark, my reality has changed. In pursuit of higher education and better opportunities, I have had to make sacrifices that many often overlook. Balancing academics with two jobs is not merely a choice, but a necessity to afford tuition and living expenses. While it may appear from the outside that we are living a dream life abroad, the truth is far more complex. Behind each step forward lies a story of perseverance, emotional distance from home, and the quiet resilience required to build a future in unfamiliar surroundings.
This experience highlights the broader challenges faced by many international students who strive to balance cultural identity, academic pressure, and economic hardship. It is a reminder that the journey of migration—while filled with ambition—is often accompanied by moments of loneliness and struggle that remain unseen.
