This past Sunday was a very special Sunday for the Postcards from Aarhus project as we wrapped up the year and, with it, the current stage of the project 🩷

In 2024, Postcards from Aarhus brought together 119 participants across nine walks in seven unique neighborhoods: Institut for (X), Gellerupparken, Øgadekvarteret, Sydhavnen, Skjoldhøjparken, Trøjborg, and Langenæs. I hope you all enjoyed your time walking and reflecting, but also! I really want to thank you all for submitting your pictures and stories: 1455 photos collected on the project’s board showcase and celebrate Aarhus through perspectives missing at the City Archive and on rare Aarhusian postcards.

Check it out yourselves https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVK2gW0fc=/

On Sunday, we tried to find out what defines Aarhus. It looks like more obvious bikes, red brick buildings, rainy clouds, and omnipresent urban recycling practices go along with its high architectural contrast, the atmosphere of trust, street culture, and a tangible mix of clean, distant facades and private - a bit hidden but thriving - live and coziness. In our conversation on a sense of home, the absolute champion turned out to be food. It looks like food in all its materiality (specific ingredients, grocery stores, restaurants, furniture) and immateriality (habits and routines, the ways of sharing food, smells, and tastes) is the key to filling at home. Right after finding your people, of course 🥰

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined the workshop and walks! This project happened because of you 😍 and because of the residency and beautiful people at the UAC Art Platform where this project found home and support 💜 I’m also deeply grateful to all the organizations who hosted and supported us: Institut for (X), Godsbanen, Aarhus, Gellerup Bibliotek, Gellerup Museum, Frontløberne, SYDHAVNEN Aarhus, Beboerneshus Livøsmøgen, Skjoldhøj Kirke, Folkehuset Trøjborg, Trøjborg Beboerhus, Lagkagehuset Langenæs, and MarselisborgCentret. And special thanks to Kulturkammerater and Studenterhus Aarhus for spreading the word.

Here’s to future meetings and new iterations of Postcards from Aarhus! 💌
Yours, Katharina

Late, but huge thanks to everyone who joined our recent Postcards from Aarhus photo walks in Gellerupparken in August and Trøjborg in September! I am also very grateful for the warm support from local organizations that welcomed us and made each walk special—Gellerup Bibliotek and Gellerup Museum, as well as Folkehuset Trøjborg and Trøjborg Beboerhus. Special thanks go to the Danish weather for being on our side, allowing us to capture Aarhus’s unique beauty without a hitch.

With October already here, I'm excited to announce our next and last (at least in 2024) photo walk in Langenæs on November 2nd. Join the event, and stay tuned for more details! I look forward to seeing you there and continuing to explore Aarhus together.

A huge thank you to all the participants of today's photowalk! I was very happy to see so many new faces, and I hope those who visited this area for the first time are as charmed and absolutely lost in it as I am 😊.

Big thanks to the weather gods for such a beautiful sunny-cloudy day ☀️☁️, and special thanks to UAC Art Platform and Institut for (X), Godsbanen, Aarhus for hosting us 🙏.

For those who have just moved to Aarhus, I hope this walk is a great start to exploring the city. Our next photowalk is on August 24th around Gellerupparken. The event is already on.

See you soon!
Katharina

A bit late, but still, with warm gratitude, I want to thank all who joined the photo walk around Skjoldhøjparken. We were blessed with rare Danish sunshine that day 🌞, making our exploration even more special. Huge thanks to Skjoldhøj Kirke for hosting us at the start and end of our journey 🙏.

The Skjoldhøj area amazed us with its diversity, natural beauty, and peacefulness that borders on abandonment 🌳. It was a joy to wander and capture its essence.

After a short break, our project is back to life! Stay tuned and follow our page to stay informed about the next four walks this year 🚶‍♀️📸.

As we are getting ready for the next Postcards from Aarhus photowalk (May 25th in Skjoldhøjparken), here are some moments from our recent adventure in Sydhavnen 📸

Thank you to everyone who joined the walk, especially those who have already uploaded their photos. All the pictures in this post are your photos— and your Aarhus ❤️

Thanks to whoever is in charge of the weather (maybe Freyr) for bringing us a Danish summer just in time for Postcards from Aarhus 🌞

A big shoutout to the welcoming Frontløberne and Sydhavnen for the warm reception 🥰

As always, you can find participants' photos, information about Sydhavnen, the project map, and the schedule for future walks on the project's page here https://katya.page/

Working on the next walk at Skjoldhøjparken on the 25th of May. Today's challenge is to find a place where to meet. Current candidates are:

- Skjoldhøjparkens Grundejerforening
that would be awesome! people from Skjoldhøjparken, Tilst - For Beboere I Parken, please please please, drop me a message if you have a room/hall where 20 people can meet for 30 minutes and a desire to share the story of this beautiful Danish way of self-organization

- Skjoldhøj Kirke.
It is modernistic, spacious, and has a great location.

- Skjoldhøj school.
It is also very well located, but... it is a school, and I am not sure that they will be crazy about hosting us.

- Skjoldhøj dormitory
The location is not great, and it is less of a public space, but I really want to check the architecture.

- EuroDeli
Quite unique... :)

- Bilka
The biggest in the area :))

Anyway, I am open to your ideas. We need a roof and a toilet. The bar is this low.

In one of the logbooks from the walk around Øgadekavarteret, I found the following remark: "I've never understood what that strange building at Langelandsgade 49 is". So I checked it on the map, then googled who the current owner of this lot is and what it is. And finally sent them an email. That is the answer:

The facility at Langelandsgade 49 is one of about 60 heat-exchange stations located throughout Aarhus. It contains a heat exchanger and pipes for transporting and distributing hot water in our district heating system. The building has been owned by Kredsløb (formerly known as AffaldVarme Aarhus and Aarhus Varme) since its construction and has always been used for its current purpose.
