We are once again taking a look back at ALTER 2026 - this time with the beautiful concert by Roxane Metayer at the impressive Aarhus City Hall!

Visual artist and musician based in Brussels, Roxane Metayer’s work is a series of tributes to the forest, exploring the relationship between humans and the living world through various mediums such as sound, image, and sculpture. Metayer compose music that blends ﬁeld recordings, acoustic instruments, and voice, creating a universe close to animal and vegetal mimicry. She has recently been working on polyphonic and spatialized sound installations, projects that have been presented in sound art venues such as Overtoon and STUK. Metayer has collaborated with other artists, most recently with the drummer Charles Dubois and Katya Shirshkova, and have led music creation workshops for young audiences. Her albums have been released on labels such as Edições, Blickwinkel, Kraak, Matière Mémoire, Morc, and Vlek, and she have performed in venues like Ancienne Belgique and Café Oto.

A month ago, we shared Alter 2026 with all of you. Now that the dust has settled, we want you to think back on the festival and share your thoughts with us in this short survey. Your help and time is very appreciated, and all responses can therefore enter our raffle to win one full Alter Festival pass for 2027.

Still thinking of the fiery trad music of Milkweed, that sat radar ablaze in a noisy wall of sound

Milkweed describe their sound as slacker-trad, which is both true and somehow insufficient. For three years Milkweed have refined a formula – taking existing source material (a folklore journal, a book on Welsh myths, another on bronze age human remains and most recently Thomas Kinsella’s masterfully stark translation of the Táin Bó Cúailnge), cutting up the words and feeding them through a woodchipper of lo-fi production and experimental folk music.

On the face of it their musical concerns are transatlantic – they follow the rich creative line that runs between British traditional music and the songs and tunes of the eastern United States. In reality their scope is global, and rooted in deep time, with influences from prehistory bleeding into a troubled and troubling modern era. As a result their music doesn’t sit easily anywhere, but ricochets between bewitching folk music and disconcerting hauntological experimentation.

During the first three years of Alter festival, it spread invisible threads throughout the underground of Aarhus from a common center. The abandoned municipality hospital connected a host of agents in both Denmark and internationally pulling all of them towards its transgressive center. As the county hospital has become unavailable to us, Alter Festival, for the third year in a row, be decentralized, spread out between a number of locations. We must now establish these unseen threads throughout the city of Aarhus, knitting together all the agents and sites that help make up the festival. Each place and each thread represent a story that weaves together a grander narrative – an entity suspended between a multitude of places as a fully altered state of the festival emerge. Welcome to Alter Festival 2027.

What an amazing opening we had yesterday!

Today has already begun with the day programme by Aarhus Lydforening. From 15:00 the concerts start at PHONO, before we move back to VoxHall, starting around 19:15!

Yesterday was an absolutely stunning day!

Thanks to NYX and all the participants for a great workshop. And thanks to Aarhus Lydforening for facilitating!

In the evening the audience was drawn into to the spiritual world of Sofie Birch, before getting split into noisy, folkloric atoms by the fantastic Milkweed!

Today we open the doors at PHONO from 15:30 for a hang-out and the opportunity to pick up your wristbands. Set to a great selection of tunes by Samiira Garane.

Then from 18:45 we invite you to the beautiful rådhushal for our opening ritual courtesy of Roxane Metayer and NYX.

Then a brisk walk to VoxHall, we’re Laura Misch, Snuggle and Ecko Bazz will take you on an expansive musical journey.

We can’t wait to see you later!
