How much can size vary within the horse family? This comparison brings together the onager, African wild ass, mountain zebra, plains zebra, kiang and Grevy’s zebra. Each number represents shoulder height, measured from the ground to the withers rather than the top of the head or ears. Short green marks indicate that level, and the ruler places all six illustrated adults on one shared scale. The kiang inhabits Asia’s high plateaus, while the three zebra species shown are African. Ear shape, coat color and stripe patterns provide useful visual clues, although size alone cannot reliably identify a species. The selected values, from 120 to 150 cm, are possible adult examples rather than averages or record measurements. S*x, population and age affect body size, and the ranges of several species overlap. A five-centimeter difference between two drawings therefore does not mean that every individual in those species follows the same order.
